The Centre for Disease Control has warned that half of gay and bisexual men with HIV in the US aren’t receiving treatment.

The study, which collected data from 19 regions, found that 1 in 5 men who have sex with men are unaware they have been infected with HIV.

It found that while 77 percent had access to care, just under half were receiving the cocktail of drugs used to treat HIV, and only 42 percent had it “under control”.

Black men and younger men were significantly less likely to be receiving treatment, while older white men were the most likely to be getting correct treatment.

Dr. Jonathan Mermin said: “A top prevention priority at CDC is making sure every gay man with HIV knows his status and receives ongoing medical care, otherwise, we will never tackle the HIV epidemic in the country.

“It’s unacceptable that treatment, one of our most powerful tools for protecting people’s health and preventing new HIV infections, is reaching only a fraction of gay men who need it.”
