Nick Jonas has admitted that The Jonas Brothers didn’t ‘do enough’ to acknowledge their gay fanbase.

The band, which the singer formed in 2005 with brothers Kevin and Joe Jonas, were famed for their promotion of abstinence and purity rings through Christian campaign True Love Waits.

Nick Jonas – who at 22 is the youngest of the brothers – has this week admitted that the group never really acknowledged their gay fans due to their ‘purity’ image.

He told NewsNowNext: “I grew up doing theatre here in New York, surrounded by [the gay community] and loving it at a young age.

“When my brothers and I started touring and had some success, naturally they became a pretty big part of our following.

“I don’t know that we ever did enough to really own that.”

However, following the break-up of the band last October, the singer says he plans to reach out to the community on his own.

He said: “I really want to make an effort to embrace the community with open arms.”

Last week he performed at a gay club in New York, stripping off in front of the crowd.

The band last year addressed rumours about their sexualities, to say that, despite not being gay, they refused to be offended by the speculation.

Joe Jonas said: “We have a lot of gay friends and gay fans. It’s a boy band stereotype; people assume, but we don’t take offence.”
