A singer from Russian duo t.A.T.u. has in a bizarre turn of events condemned gay men in a recent interview.

Julia Volkova, who has previously identified as bisexual herself, said she “would condemn” her son if he came out as gay, but that women should have the “freedom” to be lesbians, frighteningly to applause from the audience.

Speaking in the interview, which has been translated into English via subtitles, Volkova says: “I would condemn him, because I believe that a real man must be a real man. God created man for procreation, it is the nature. The man for me is the support, the strength of… I won’t accept a gay son.”

When the interviewer goes on to note that she wouldn’t mind if she had a gay daughter, she said those comments only apply to a daughter not a son, and that she thinks, for men, being gay is a “bad freedom”.

Continuing, she says “freedom for men” is the option of sleeping with lots of women, and that men have “no right to be a fag”.

“I have many gay friends. I believe that being gay is all still better than murderers, thieves or drug addicts. If you choose out of all this, being gay a little better than the rest.”

The band t.A.T.u officially split in 2011, but have since re-united on a number of occasions, and have previously spoken out in favour of LGBT rights.

Last August, Lena said the anti-gay laws in Russia were “weird” because “a lot of people from the government with the big positions are gay”.

As the country’s most successful pop act, they also entered Eurovision for Russia in 2003, and performed as an interval act in 2009, where they sang with the Russian Army Choir in front of a giant pink tank decorated with flowers.

Bandmate Lena has previously confirmed she is straight, and that the band’s lesbian image is an “act”.
