The star of Duck Dynasty has claimed that he is only as homophobic as Jesus.

Phil Robertson was suspended from the A&E reality show for less than two weeks last year, when he questioned in an interview to GQ why gay men would prefer “a man’s anus” over a vagina.

Despite the family claiming it had “moved on” from the incident, earlier this year Robertson gave an Easter Sermon claiming that the “sexually immoral” would go to hell.

Addressing the controversy in an ABC news interview, Phil Robertson claimed that he is only as homophobic as Jesus

He said of trying to understand homosexuality: “The only place I know of that I could have gone would be the Bible.

“The dictionary wouldn’t have explained it, an encyclopaedia wouldn’t have explained it, whether it was a sin or not, so I went to the only source I had.

“I’m as much of a homophobe as Jesus was.”

He added: “People participating in homosexual behaviour, they need to know that I love them.

Despite the star’s repeatedly outspoken comments, Duck Dynasty recently finished airing its sixth season, with a seventh season reportedly already filming.

His son Alan Robertson earlier this year hailed him as a 21st Century prophet at an anti-gay group’s conference, and likened him to John the Baptist.
