Openly gay football player Michael Sam could be joining the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

Outsports reports that the Cowboys are flying Sam to Dallas for a physical in the coming hours.

If he passes the physical, the team intends on signing him to their practice squad.

This would make Sam the first openly gay member of a regular-season team.

Sam made history in May when he was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, making him the first openly gay player on an NFL team.

Sam was cut by the Rams on Saturday.

He was not drafted by another team this weekend during a waivers period, meaning he can only sign to a practice squad this year.

Last week, sports news station ESPN aired a segment questioning whether Sam should shower with his teammates, for which the station later apologised.

On Sunday, an NFL player posted to Twitter that ESPN is to blame for Sam not getting picked up by another team because “no one wants the distraction” the station is causing.
