An NFL player posted to Twitter that ESPN is to blame for Michael Sam not getting picked up by another NFL team.

Sam was not drafted by another team this weekend after being cut by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday.

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Eric Wood said in reponse to a tweet from an NFL sportscaster that Sam wasn’t picked up by another team because no team wants the distraction ESPN is causing.

This appears to be the first time Wood has spoken out about Sam’s NFL career.

Last week, ESPN aired a segment questioning whether Sam should shower with his teammates, for which the station later apologised.

In a brief statement released this weekend, Sam said: “The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I’ve always known. The journey continues.”

St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher admitted this weekend that his team wasn’t the “right place” for Sam.

Sam made history in May when he was drafted by the Rams, making him the first openly gay player on an NFL team.
