Medically necessary transition-related procedures will be covered under Cincinnati, Ohio’s health insurance starting next year.

With the inclusion, Cincinnati will become the first city in Ohio to offer transition-related coverage in its health benefits.

For surgery to be deemed “medically necessary,” a professional mental health counselor has to sign off stating that the procedure is a necessity to the transgender individual.

Interim Cincinnati City Manager Scott Stiles, who initiated the insurance change, told Cincinnati.com: “It is important that we provide necessary medical benefits to all of our employees.

“This positions us well for progress and keeps the City competitive as an employer.”

The new procedure-specific coverage includes a maximum lifetime coverage of $75,000 (£45,276) per person.

A study released today shows US LGBT adults are more likely to lack health insurance coverage than their non-LGBT counterparts.
