The mayor of the capital of Kazakhstan capital Astana has accused the international media of “promoting” homosexuality, and “brainwashing” children.

The statement was made by Akim Imangali Tasmagambetov last week, during a meeting in the city.

He said modern technology posed danger to children as the media is used for “brainwashing”, and turning “false and unacceptable social vices” into societal norms.

Taking further aim at the media, he quoted American sociologist Joseph Overton, saying the media, and “certain techniques” over a long period of time can be used to “manipulate the public opinion”.

Saying that despite same-sex relationships having been “forbidden for centuries in the religious world”, they would now be accepted on a “planetary scale.”

“It has not just become a political norm in a range of developed countries, but the perception of the society has been distorted to such an extent that the US state of California approved a compulsory course on historical accomplishments of representatives of sexual minorities. I think you see for yourself how the topic is promoted in the international media. A reasonable question under the circumstances is what to expect next?” Tasmagambetov continued.

His speech concluded to say that education should be based on building a society capable of resisting the “gay propaganda”.

An MP in the country Bakhytbek Smagul, recently called for an anti-gay law to be implemented, noting countries such as Russia, which in June passed a law banning the promotion of “non traditional” relationships, in his calls to “root out homosexual relations”.
