Football manager vows to fight ‘shocking’ allegations of homophobia

Football manager Malky Mackay has responded to allegations that he was involved in the sending of homophobic, racist and sexist texts, to say he will defend himself against accusations made against him.

Allegations were made by the his former club Cardiff City that he sent a string of offensive texts whilst working there, and a dossier has been given to the FA to investigate.

One of the texts allegedly read: “He’s a snake, a gay snake. Not to be trusted.”

Sky Sports reports that Mackay has strongly refuted the claims, and that he will defend himself, as the FA says it will investigate him.

Cardiff has also alleged that Crystal Palace’s former sporting director Iain Moody, who stepped down amid the controversy, was in the wrong.

Moody had been head of recruitment under Mackay at Cardiff before he was sacked in October.

A spokesman for the FA said it had received accounts of issues related to Moody and Mackay at Cardiff, and said: “The FA can confirm it is currently investigating this matter.”

Crystal Palace uploaded a statement to its website today, reading: “In light of the events of yesterday, Sporting Director, Iain Moody has tendered his resignation and it has been accepted with immediate effect.

“There will be no further comment from the club on this matter.”

The League Manager’s Association (LMA) today released a statement claiming that he did not write any of the messages, but not giving details of his involvement.

The statement read: “Malky has said that he will be fully co-operating with any FA investigation and that he looks forward to putting the record straight thereafter.”
