Arizona State University offensive lineman Edward Sarafin is the first active Division I Football player to come out as gay.

The fifth-year senior Edward (Chip) Sarafin told Phoenix-based ‘Compete,’ a magazine for gay sports, he began coming out to teammates about his sexual orientation last spring.

Sarafin said he told his teammates mostly for himself because he wanted them to hear it straight from him and not through the college rumour mill.

He said, “It was really personal to me and it benefitted my state of mind greatly.”

Sarafin’s announcement follows in the wake of University of Massachusetts sophomore Derrick Gordon, who became the first active Division I Basketball player in April. And St. Louis Rams Football linebacker Michael Sam, who came out in February.
