Ed Miliband has recorded a video for this weekend’s Brighton Pride and says it is a moment to celebrate but also to do “much more” on LGBT equality

“I want to send my best wishes to you for Brighton Pride,” the Labour leader said in his video. “Brighton and Hove is a fantastic city, and Pride is a moment where we see it in its great diversity, its tolerance and its celebration of equality.

“This year there is a lot to celebrate. The celebration of the passage of equal marriage through Parliament that has enabled people right around the country and in Brighton to get married, to marry the people they love.

“But I know we have got a lot further to go. Much more to do to counter homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools, violence against gay and lesbian people, and internationally… so many gays and lesbians find themselves persecuted because of their sexual orientation.

“So let’s celebrate Pride knowing the steps we have taken [and] the steps we have still got to take.

“Have a fantastic Pride.”

Brighton Pride is taking place this weekend. The main parade and Preston Park event is on Saturday.

The parade through the city begins at 11am from Madeira Drive.
