Actress Laverne Cox called Whoopi Goldberg an “inspiration as an actor” during her recent appearance on The View.

Cox told Goldberg: “You’ve been a huge inspiration to me as an actor.

“Ten years ago when I was studying with my acting mentor Susan Batson, I was sort of frustrated with, you know, I don’t look like anybody else.

“She would say, ‘Whoopi didn’t look like anybody else but the talent, the intelligence, and the humor got her there. If Whoopi can do it, anybody can do it.’”

Cox talked to The View about being a prominent mainstream voice for the transgender community and her role on Orange Is The New Black, saying it was the first time she has played a character with nuance and complexity.

At the end of the segment, Goldberg told Cox that she’s “got what everybody needs.”

Laverne Cox made history earlier this month when she became the first openly trans actress to ever be nominated for an Emmy award.
