US: Florida anti-gay activist says opposing equal marriage is ‘an issue worth dying for’

  • Martin

‘A Florida anti-gay activist has claimed that his opposition to same-sex marriage is “worth dying” over.’

    So who’s stopping him?

    • tom_beauchamparnold

What? You thought he meant he would be willing to die for his opposition to same sex marriage?
No, no, no. From his point of view, the dying is for other folks to do. Otherwise, it is not nearly as convenient.

    • Soren456

The hyperbole of martyrdom. Hilarious, especially when you know that he’d run screaming away from any real threat to himself.

    • sJames6621

someone buy him a bottle of aspirin and reliable it candy and tell him to take it all at once.

Bye bye – no kidneys, no liver., no having to watch gay people get married

Another example of how the words family, morals, are code words for hatred

  • Patrick, Leeds

Go on then. Get on with it.

  • Daniel

Don’t let anyone stop you poppet.

  • CHBrighton

    Off you go then.

  • Bikerman

Such a valuable contribution to the debate so go die

  • rondonaghe

The scenario in which he no doubt imagines dying concomitantly must include a battle and killing over. Better watch this one or his minions.

  • gingerlycolors

If opposing marriage equality is worth dying for then I suggest that he hurry up and get on with it then!

    • Barry Scarfe

Agreed. Seriously, how can anyone be so brainwashed by religion (presumably) that they abhor the personal happiness of others and wish to deny them civil equality? I mean, how exactly are a small number of gay and lesbian fellow American citizens getting a CIVIL marriage going to spoil or interfere with his life?

  • Tom (Winnipeg)

The depth of his brainwashing is an abomination! I wouldn’t feel at all sorry. Go ahead.

  • Leonard Woodrow

    If only he would! :)

  • Rumbelow

    ‘an issue worth dying for’
    By all means …go ahead!

  • jlvnv

How absurd to make such a comment. He reminds me of the kid who’s going to hold his breath to punish his parents. So hold your breath or drink you cup of hemlock. Cheers!

  • Angelus Lupus

The issue may be “worth dying for” but fortunately for him it’s not rich, cis, hetero guys risking being killed just for being themselves.

  • Halou

Bigotry is “worth dying for”, he says. Well, so is going to the shop to buy a pint of milk. It is so easy for a person to say that they are willing to die for something that presents no danger to life whatsoever.

  • @Mike-uk2011

    Prove it!

  • Keith Francis Farrell

Well if it is worth dying for why is the bastard still alive. Go jump off a bridge or tower block to protest us taking equal rights. You can protest all the way down to hell.

  • doug

    Drop dead.

  • Robert W. Pierce

I so hope his wish is fulfilled. Christians are supposed to be prepared to die for their beliefs, so he should get his affairs in order.

  • Steve_R

Much though I disagree with him, and wouldn’t wish it on him, it’s quite clearly his choice, and consequently it’s would be cynical to say “he’ll live to regret it”

  • George Penfold

    Shame I don’t have a gun !

    • Steven Gregory

He’s in Florida: you might get away with it!

  • NickDavisGB

Someone grab some matches, I’ll build the pyre.

  • Jon (Malaysia)

It’s all well and good to make cheeky comments like, go follow the lemmings, or, go make some toast in the bath etc, and I don’t criticize those, I rather enjoy them but this guy is seriously dangerous. He’s in a position to influence children with his role in the fake scouts. I can just see it now; some over zealous kid listening to this guy goes to 7-11 or some corner shop buys a gun (only in America) and blows half his school or uni away shouting, “This school is full of fags.” It happens all too frequently in America.

    • Steven Gregory

It’s a sad truth that indoctrination of youth in the United States is at the discretion of parents. Have you heard of the documentary KIDNAPPED FOR CHRIST, about an operation that parents contacted to abduct their children and whisk them off to a labor camp in the Dominican Republic?

A documentarian was granted access — somebody messed up or was finally feeling terrible about what they were doing — and she produced a searing film. Apparently word of the documentary got around and the camp, along with the organization that ran it, are shuttered.

  • Cal

“cohabitates”? English lessons from George W Bush, I presume.
Many used to argue that Abolishing slavery would threaten the structure of society. Yeah, yeah. Heard it all before.

    • sJames6621

reminds me of 1967 in the USA when conservatives screeched about no longer being able to protect the sanctity of the white race after bans on inter-racial marriage were trashed.

  • jordy

From your lips, to your god’s ears.

  • brandon_71087

Then he should do everyone a favor and go take himself out, which would decrease the surplus population and weed out the brain-damaged idiots that have been permanently damaged by religious indoctrination.

  • SFM

Well, if he’s certain it’s either my civil rights or his death, my condolences to his family

  • Jeff Jankowiak

This is not a cause worth dying for. Nothing is. But if this man wants to have a physical discussion on this matter he is going to lose and lose bad in front of all his buddies.

  • sJames6621

RE his Tralblazers – immagine conservative parents sending their secretly gay kid to this org where vicious anti gay jokes etc are going to be everywhere

One has to wonder how many of these cons kids will come home in a body bag after commiting suicide.

  • sJames6621

PS re te state AG appealing the ruling, Her name is biondi and she supports traditional marriage by being divorced twice.

    • Steven Gregory

Figures. Isn’t she that little blond thing who looks FOX-ready?

  • lukefromcanada

really see i always thought that divorce, adultery, infidelity etc devalued marriage not whether a loving same sex couple wants to get married. In fact by not allowing them to get married and forcing them to not get married you care contributing to the very thing that you rail against.

    • Nothing devalues the marriage of two people when that marriage is genuinely about two people who love each other being together in a committed relationship. If someone else’s relationship is capable of “devaluing” someone else’s marriage then those two people should never have married in the first place.

It would make absolutely no difference to me or my partner what some complete stranger a hundred miles away does, who they marry, why, or under what circumstance they part.

  • Raymond G. Whitham

“The splinter group bans youth who “promote sexual immorality of any kind, or engage in behaviour that would become a distraction to the mission of the program”.”
I wonder what actually IS the “mission” of the program. I wouldn’t trust this idiot with any child.

    • Steven Gregory

The mission of both groups seems to be: “Jesus told me to stop you from having sex!”

  • Steven Gregory

“…these arrangements dilute and devalue marriage.”

How pitiful and weak is someone’s marriage, and how mundane is their partner, when the value and potency of their union is subject to the relationship of two people they probably don’t even know?

What do these idiots fear from two people who love and are devoted to each other?

    • This is because so many “Christian” Republican Americans are themselves in sham marriages, unions of convenience and status. A lot of them are far more concerned with appearing to be “whiter than white” and maintaining an image, than actually living their lives and allowing others to live theirs.

These are quite delusional people – they believe in an invisible sky wizard and refuse reality, so there is obviously some psychological problem there.

    • Barry Scarfe

Exactly. If these people are so worried about marriage being devalued then why don’t they campaign for divorces to be made harder to obtain? I have never heard or seen any of them do this. Also, they could have a word with their fellow straights like Britney Spears for example who was so devoted to the concept of so-called ‘pure’ and ‘unsullied’ straight marriage hers lasted a grand total of about 56 DAYS! If anything ‘devalues’ marriage it isn’t a few gay couples getting a CIVIL marriage a year but straights like Britney who clearly aren’t committed to their unions being a more than just a temporary arrangement.

      • Steven Gregory

And let’s not forget Britney’s blind drunk 55-hour Vegas hitch. Denver has a DJ who won’t spin her music. Young gays constantly ask why not and he says, “Because she’s a homophobe, a big time Republican donor, and a hypocrite. She hates your fagggot ass.”

  • It’s interesting to see the radicals increasing their rhetoric. And it’s also concerning that this Christian extremism isn’t being taken as seriously as it should be.

If a Muslim politician or community leader said that preventing equal rights for women was worth “dying for” they would be dragged into a room by the CIA and not see daylight for three months.

But if you’re a Christian extremist and the Gays are your target, it really doesn’t seem to get the same level of attention.

Religious extremism and threat is not solely an Islamic issue, these radical American Christians are becoming more vocal and more threatening the further they are backed into a corner. They are losing, gay marriage is passing across the USA, and the Republican party is being almost entirely rejected by all young voters – they need to be increasingly monitored because of this growing threat of Christian/Republican extremism.

  • Truth

    Then … die ….

  • “A Florida anti-gay activist has claimed that his opposition to same-sex marriage is “worth dying” over.”

Obviously this person has no personal experience to draw on but his ‘hate and bigotry and intolerance’ when it comes to the tragedy death can deliver to the people that suffer the loss.

Perhaps he might brain up and talk with those family’s that through the devices of ‘hate and bigotry and intolerance’, they find their loved ones suffered horrible deaths and would too feel deaths tragedy the rest of their lives as well.

They don’t even have to be a GLBTQI family.
Seek out some one of the same ilk who he can relate too.
He could pick and choose because ‘hate and bigotry and intolerance’, well they have no fashion sense.

Unless tragic pain comes into fashion that is.

  • Alexander Kelso Shiels

Someone show him to the nearest bridge or mountain! Then there will be one less bigot.

  • Well then go ahead and die, you won’t be missed.

  • Steven Gregory

Anti-gay activists like to bring up religion and the “Founding Fathers” intentions for the United States. Paraphrasing a contender on the TV competition LAST COMIC STANDING: “I beg if you asked the Founding Fathers what they thought about [Equal Marriage] they would respond: “What’s this I hear about women voting?” and “Who is that in the White House, is that one of Thomas Jefferson’s kids?”

  • Psychologist

Is he REALLY saying that preventing marriage equality for gay people is worth DYING for ? REALLY ? Wow !
1st – what has the sexuality of SOMEONE ELSE got to do with him ? And just how could it possibly affect HIS life ?
2nd – WHY is he SO CONCERNED (to the point of OBSESSION – and potentially die for) with the sexual activity of gay people ?

    Classic Homophobia !

There is something SERIOUSLY WRONG with someone who claims that preventing someone else’s equality is SO important to THEM, that it’s worth dying for !

  • Dr. ValleyGirl

I always wonder why huge anti-gay loud-mouth’s first thought is to start a youth organization for boys. Actually, I sadly already know how this story is going to turn out.

  • Inis_Magrath

Speaking as a straight married man, the only thing that dilutes and devalues MY marriage is when people use my “traditional” marriage as a premise to persecute those they hate. I really wish these ranting homophobes would stop saying they are “defending” traditional marriage — my marriage needs no defending and the words and deeds of the haters do far more to damage society.

    • Hard Truth

It is done simply because they need something to justify their beliefs. They could never, and will never admit that it is simply because of themselves and their hatred.

  • DTNorth

Please. I implore you. DIE for it. Then the rest of us can just get on with our lives.
