Sandi Toksvig: Nicky Morgan is in charge of equality, but not quite for everybody

  • Brian-E

    Very apt and appropriate.
I suppose Nicky Morgan could respond that Sandi Toksvig’s remarks are typical for a a comedian.

  • Silly Old Bastard

Who cares what Toksvig thinks. She’s just a so called funny woman. Never
    made me laugh.

The equalities minister does not need to be gay, black, disabled or a
    combination thereof.

    • CHBrighton

No, that’s quite right. An equalities minister can be from any section of the community because treating everyone with respect and dignity is something that affects us all. The point Sandi Toksvig is making, is that whoever is Equalities Minister needs to understand what equality means and to apply those principals without favour and without prejudice. We now have an equalities minister who, it woul seem, is so against dignity, respect and equality for some sections of the community that she refuses to have anything to do with them. And the Prime Minister has gone along with her prejudices and appointed someone else to see to those parts of the equalities agenda the Minister refuses to work on. And further, because the issues are those around equality for LGBT issues, the PM has put a gay man in charge so the LGBT community might be hoodwinked into thinking their needs are being met. And that, Mr Silly Old Bastard, is how the Very Nasty Part operates.

      • Silly Old Bastard

I think you’ll find the Cameron is going for the lady vote by putting in as many women that can be trusted to head up a ministry. That is not many.

        • GulliverUK

Not many women who are acceptable, and probably even fewer men ! He won’t win the Womens’ vote by putting in place someone who wants to reduce Womens’ rights by cutting the abortion time limit to 20 weeks – even if the real truth is that the number of women who have abortions over 20 weeks is tiny. A policy should be informed by empirical evidence and rational critical thinking, so that everyone can see for themselves exactly why a particular time limit is required. Her dogmatic fundamentalist fringe beliefs aren’t those supported by most Christians, and certainly not the general public, and most importantly — not the medical profession.

          • Silly Old Bastard

I’m against abortion. We are aborting ourselves out of existence. I look outside my window and see these dead people’s places taken by increasing numbers
of Muslims and black people. Two groups with a terrible attitude to L & G. Two groups that do not do abortion.

          • Liam

House fag AND a racist. I think Miserable Old Bigot would be more apt.

          • Silly Old Bastard

Where do you get the racist bit from?

          • l

            From the context

          • Silly Old Bastard

            Who are you ?

          • GulliverUK

You can believe what you want, the simple fact is that women have a right to control their own bodies, and if the pill has failed, or a man hasn’t worn contraception, or that has failed, and they are not ready to have a child, or don’t want to, then it is their right to choose. The women makes the final decision – it is her body, not yours.

We have not aborted ourselves out of existence – what a stupid thing to say, the world’s population is growing at unsustainable levels – that is to say growth is unsustainable due to wealth inequality and poor use of resources. The planet could easily triple in population and be ok, but only if land and resources are properly distributed and correctly used. Ah, but as you say, you are really worried about all these non-white foreigners – like any good Tory your age is.

          • Silly Old Bastard

Yes, I do like to be in the company of white British people, intelligent and erudite. They’re my people. It’s my preference, and I’m not ashamed of it.

          • CHBrighton

But decent intelligent and erudite people avoid you like the plague.

          • kane

‘…Two groups that do not do abortion…’

looks like your kind of people

        • john

Well Lesbians are ladies as well and I don’t think they are that fond of her as well. She voted against equal marriage for lesbians as well. In addition her CofE church is full of lesbian vicars, will she promoting their rights in the CofE! Will she be asking for the CofE policy on same sex marriage for lesbians and gays to be changed?

          • Silly Old Bastard

I find it rather silly that when a minister is appointed, some people are concerned with nothing more than “what’s in it for me”

          • CHBrighton

That’s all that Very Nasty Part people do vote for.

        • Jones

He is going for the women vote by packing the cabinet with women, however these women need to be capable of doing their job and fit for it. Appointing someone minister for equalities when that MP voted against same-sex marriage means in effect that minister is going against their brief and are not suitable for the post.

          • Silly Old Bastard

I’m not sure if anyone else has felt this, but I do believe that Cameron is now distancing himself from anything L & G. Big time too!

          • Jones

Of course other people feel the same way I do. Have you not read the comments on this article?

    • http://thewriterstransition.wordpress.com/ Tamlyn Ailsa MacPherson

but has to believe in equality to do the job fairly which she clearly doesn’t. Had she spoken out against interracial or interfaith marriage instead, she would not have gotten this position. This is someone who puts her own beliefs ahead of the rights of others and has now been put in a position of authority that clashes with her record against the principles of that office.

It’d be like putting someone who has nothing but contempt for the unemployed, the disabled or the long term sick in charge of the benefits system…

      • Silly Old Bastard

I’m not sure you fully realise how government works.

        • http://thewriterstransition.wordpress.com/ Tamlyn Ailsa MacPherson

          Oh how delightfully condescending!

I know how government works, but how it works and how it should work are quite different.

          • Silly Old Bastard

That’s better, you’re showing a bit of reality now.

      • kane

‘…It’d be like putting someone who has nothing but contempt for the unemployed, the disabled or the long term sick in charge of the benefits system…’

err, they did. they put iain duncan smith in charge of that department

        • http://thewriterstransition.wordpress.com/ Tamlyn Ailsa MacPherson

          Yes… I know… I was being ironic

    • Rumbelow

Go away, you are becoming really tedious now.

      • Silly Old Bastard

And spoil the party by taking myself away. Not a bit of it!

    • Cal

An Oxford Dictionary definition that may help open your mind. Satire: “The use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues”
Surely, even from the depths of your ignorance you can see the useful role satirists play.

      • Silly Old Bastard

My ignorant mind will have to dwell on that for a bit.

The world of entertainment is riddled with so called comics who are quite useless without a script in front of them. Hello Sandy!

        • Cal

While at Cambridge University Sandi Toksvig was a leading member of the Footlights, possibly the world’s most famous undergraduate comedy club. They are well known for writing and devising their own material. After that she made her name at the Comedy Store, a well known comedy venue specialising in improvisation. Since then, as a natural wit, she has been responsible for writing most of her own scripts.
You certainly know how to make a fool of yourself.

          • Silly Old Bastard

I’m a bit of a natural too, on the side. But I don’t suppose you’ve noticed.

          • Rumbelow

I think you flatter yourself SOB.

          • Silly Old Bastard

            You’re too kind, Rum

          • Cal

That might be the wittiest thing you will ever say. Cheers.

    • TomSatsuma

It’s genuinely hilarious/painful to see you try and play the part of condescending, aloof and intelligent wit here – based only on the strength of comments like this that clearly show how bad you are at it. It’s like watching a child try to use big words to seem more grown up and getting them wrong.

You are making a fool of yourself.

      • Silly Old Bastard

But as you say yourself, you get hilarity and pain from my posts. What a strange man you are.

  • Bikerman

Cameron quite clearly understood that this woman was incapable of doing the whole job that the job title describes, otherwise he would not have farmed out an important part of it. It’s like appointing a new headmaster to a school, responsible for everything except for Year 10 and having a neighbouring head come in to be responsible for that year group. It’s ridiculous. She’s the wrong person for the job.

I’m glad that Sandi is drawing more attention to this, as the media hardly made an issue of it.

BBC Radio 4 may have had Sandi Toksvig briefly in a comedy act ridiculing Nicky Morgan but last night and again this morning it had a propaganda programme profiling Nicky Morgan saying how wonderful she was. A full program dedicated to her church and friends saying what a fantastic woman she is. No criticim of her or examination of her or her belief. The BBC Radio 4 should be doing a proper profile of her!

    • Cal

I used to love listening to Radio 4, particularly the Today Programme. I do miss it but just can’t bear all the irrelevant religious opinion they feel compelled to include. R4 used to be the voice of reason. So sad.
I listen to LBC now, which has it’s share of right wing presenters, but at least they don’t promote religion.

  • Benji

If I was Lilian Ladele (the civil partnership registrar who lost her job because she didn’t want to do have to serve gay couples because of her “Christian beliefs”) I would be asking myself why Nicky Morgan’s employer can make “reasonable accommodation” for her beliefs in the job whereas Ladele’s employer did not.
I’m sure this point will not be lost on the Christian Institute & they will no doubt be lobbying the Equalities Minister strongly for more rights for “people of faith”.
Can someone remind me who the Equalities Minister is?
Look forward to “reasonable accommodation” for all (Christians who don’t want to serve LGBT people) if the Tories (with without UKIP & those LibDems & Labour who oppose LGBT rights) win a significant majority at the General Election)

    • doug

In a landmark judgement, the court of appeal said ‘that religion was a matter of opinion that couldn’t be proved and which therefore should not be used as the basis for making law. The law is not designed to protect peoples’ religious beliefs.’

I am not sure where they will find room for “reasonable accommodation” in that.

      • Mikeylano

        Which case was it?

    • Rumbelow

Nicky Morgan is the new not quite Equalities minister

  • That There Other David

Just nine more months everyone, and “Dave”‘s little Bullingdon Club MkII will hopefully be history, new lady members and all.

Hold tight. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

  • GulliverUK

Cameron seems to know how to shoot himself in the foot. What would have been the difference between Nicky Morgan and Nadine Dorries? Not much. She’s only been an MP since 2010 so we don’t know how she would have voted on an equal age of consent, goods / services protections, employment protections, access to IVF, equal adoption rights. But she’s one of “those” sorts of Christians, she doesn’t believe in full equality – we’re second-class citizens in her eyes, and should remain so. We do know she’s also against womens’ rights because she wants to reduce termination times to 20 weeks — usually people who strive for that actually want abortion outlawed but understand they will never get there, so just try to restrict it as much as possible. Her views of equal marriage are irrelevant, the legislation is passed and settled, period, but nobody can dismiss that it makes her unsuitable to a role where full equality is the goal – or perhaps that isn’t Cameron’s goal. If he’s trying to win the womens’ vote as some suggest, having someone who is anti-abortion won’t help, and now he’s just pissed off the LGBT community. Nicky’s career will be very short, she doesn’t have a huge majority, her views are narrow-minded and heavily biased by religious dogma which doesn’t even represent the majority of other Christians in the UK, and all indications are that the Tories will lose the next election.

If she really wanted to show us we are all wrong and she can make a difference she would remove the 12-month “no-sex” period for blood donations and bring in new testing which would eliminate all discrimination. She would also repair the damage this government has done by not making companies provide equal survivor pension benefits to us. She has enough time to do both those things before the next election.

  • Ilex Aquilfolium

Only Britain could back such a ridiculous appointment. It’s akin to that Blair being special envoy to the Middle East.

  • Paul Johnson

By the time she’s bu**ered up watched by all it will be too late and she’ll get moved on by Cameron like the Pope moving his Priests around to deflect from wrongdoing to children. That’s how parliament deals with incompetents. But we shall see.

  • Tobias

Proof, if ever one needed it, that Conservative policies are based on Orwell’s “Animal Farm”

    • Silly Old Bastard

That’s really deep. But meaningless, I’m afraid.

  • Robert W. Pierce

Morgan’s appointment has more to do with shoring up would-be defectors to UKIP, reinforcing the right wing ethos the Tory party is so notorious for as well as appeasing religious nutters, the C4M rabble and euro-sceptics on the back benches. They now believe they are going to get a majority in the GE 2015 because of it. Delusional in my opinion. If anything, it’s going to alienate younger women and the younger generation overall in spite of this latest piece of window dressing with the very inexperienced Morgan, and Truss, a former Shell (pro-fracking, pro badger cull) emloyee and others. Interestingly, not one of his cabinet attended state school. Welcome to the nastier Tory party which hopefully will be its undoing in 2015. They forget that the electorate have long memories.

    • Silly Old Bastard

I’m a Conservative party member, but I do admit the party does not do much
to appeal to elderly men of lavender like you.

      • GulliverUK

I think most people had already guessed that!

Is there any point in coming here, giving us the benefit of your wisdom, when the party you support has nothing to offer us? Nope, not really. They’ve messed up equal marriage – still haven’t sorted out equal pension rights, and seem to be forcing Civil Partners in to marriage, and denying heterosexuals who want a Civil Partnership that opportunity, and their blood ban changes amount to zero – still completely discriminatory.

Plus Cameron’s policy of cancelling old convictions of victimless crime also amounted to nothing – 16,000 estimated as eligible, but just a handful had their convictions removed from their file. All in all the Conservatives really haven’t given us much – equal marriage would have come in if Labour got in, or they would have done it in 2015 anyway.

        • Silly Old Bastard

Yes, there is a point my coming here, though it’s only as time and opportunity allows. It’s called giving the other point of view. Plenty here don’t want me. They want to silence me. They have closed their minds. It’s rather like being gay in the 1960s, ironically.

      • Robert W. Pierce

Elderly men of lavender? You know nothing about my age. Moreover, it seems to cater to self-loathing fools like you.

        • Silly Old Bastard

Self loathing? Not at all. As for fool, how dare you!

          • Rick

Coming from someone who identifies them self as ‘Silly Old Bastard’?

          • Silly Old Bastard

Explanation for my chosen name can be found in my previous. posts. Do go through them.

  • Sim Morris

How can we get Nicky Morgan sacked?
Would protesting events that she attends be effective?
Would constant pressure on Cameron to sack her work.
This woman is a danger to our community and it is in all our interest to ensure she is sacked..

  • Sim Morris

By appointing this bigot Nicky MOrgan, Cameron has proven yet again that the Tories have not changed. They remain the party of hatred.
No LGBT person in their right mind should vote Tory.
Out of interest, has the LGBTory group condemned Morgan’s appointment?
I’ll be they haven’t – the pathetic quislings.
