Jersey’s first ever LGBT rally will take place on Saturday, in response to the stalling of a bill to make same-sex marriage legal there.

An amendment was tabled yesterday by Home Affairs Minister Ian Le Marquand, who said same-sex marriage could potentially have “unintended consequences.”

It means same-sex marriage will be delayed, as the Chief Minister must complete a consultation into same-sex marriage by the end of December.

Almost 600 guests had on Facebook confirmed they would attend the rally on Saturday, which will take place at Royal Square, St Hellier.

The stalling amendment was passed with 24 votes to 18, and the amended bill passed with 39 votes to 1.

The Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey – which have a combined population of just 165,000 – maintain autonomy from the UK as crown dependencies, and are not subject to British law, leaving both without same-sex marriage.

Guernsey equalised the age of consent in 2010and its Chief Minister this year pledged to introduce civil unions.

Jersey introduced civil partnerships in 2012.
