Legendary swimmer Ian Thorpe to address sexuality in Parkinson interview

  • David H

Aside form it being something of a non-story, by running it you’ve now placed him in the damned if he is and damned if he isn’t camp.

If he comes out as gay – the whole world is going to say “told you so” and then slate him for not coming out sooner; and if he again says that he’s straight, the rumours and criticisms of his “hiding” his sexuality will persist.

PLEASE stick to reporting news. This is basically a trailer which will more than likely just lead to a massive anticlimax – unless, you’re just trying to drum up viewers for Parkinson?

    • Leonard Woodrow

“If he comes out as gay – the whole world is going to say “told you so” and then slate him for not coming out sooner; and if he again says that he’s straight, the rumours and criticisms of his “hiding” his sexuality will persist.”

Yup! I feel terribly sorry for the guy, who is clearly a sensitive and kind person. Not everybody is able to shrug their shoulders and ignore the opinions of others … and for somebody as famous and in the public eye as he is, it must be torture. I wish him well and hope it all works out for him.

      • James!

For all the talk of tolerant Australia he’d probably have to move.

        • lit per

Tolerant Australia? Their PM is a christonazi who is “threatened” by homosexuality”.

          • Joeoz

I wish people would stop judging all Australians on the fact that we have a, moronic, homophobic, bigoted, idiot for Prime Minister…

          • Johnny

and one who was born in England…the poor guy never stood a chance.

Hey Joe how is it going?

          • Joeoz

Hi Johnny, I’m going well… thank you for asking!
            How goes it with you?

          • Johnny

Pretty good tho’ I can’t wait for October and warm weather again. Unfortunately, some on this site like to Aussie bash whenever the opportunity arises. Just ignore it or dish it back to them. Enjoy the rest of the week.

          • Joeoz

Thanks for the advice… I usually do ignore the Aussie bashes…
I take it that they are extremely jealous of Australians for living in such a wonderful country…

Actually, I prefer winter… it can get really humid in Sydney during the summer…

          • lit per

            You elected him.

          • David H

That’s a stupid comment. I believe the incumbent Australian government got around 53% of the vote; so 47% of the electorate didn’t vote for them; so it’s pretty much evens that Joe DIDN’T elect him. Or, based on your logic, are we to assume that you’re one of the idiots who voted Cameron in????

          • lit per

Cameron isn’t a rabid anti-gay nazi. And even if he is, he doesn’t let it influence the UK politics.

          • David H

I agree, for a Tory he’s actually quite gay friendly. The point is that just because someone is in government you can’t assume that everyone, or even a majority, voted for them.

          • Joeoz

            Thank you… David!
No I certainly didn’t vote for Tony Abbott…!
I’ve always voted Labor. The Liberals have done sweet FA for gays and lesbians in Australia.

          • Joeoz

            You’re a ignoramus… I’ve never voted for the libs in my life…
            I’ve always voted Labor…

          • lit per

You mean you voted for that insane homophobic (-U-N-T Gillard?

          • Joeoz

I can only assume that you voted for that insane homophobic (-U-N-T Margaret Thatcher?

        • Joeoz

Why would he have to move from Australia… Australians are as tolerant as any country! He’s in the sporting world… and that’s the place that needs tolerance…! Why does everyone pick on Australia…? So where you live must be the paragon of tolerance? Intolerance exists in every country…!

          • James!

Tolerant if you’re white. What about the aborigines or don’t they count?

          • Joeoz

            Get your facts right…
I’m sure you must be one of the most tolerant people around…
            Yes I’m being sarcastic!!!
Instead of being an arm chair traveler, why don’t you see what Australia is really like… though I’d have to say you’re probably too bias and I’d have to say… probably a troll!!!

        • Johnny

James, you’re not a whinging Pom by any chance?

          • James!

suck my balls bítch. Australians are still messing with the indigenous peoples children and if your standards are equal to the uks then those kids will probably be raped. poor vulnerable children don’t stand a chance with some Anglo men. Just look at Thailand and the Philippines.

          • Joeoz

            Grow up you moron!!!
What the hell are you talking about???

  • James!

Aren’t people cruel. He’s just a man struggling like the rest of us and he has to discuss his private life in public. This is why some gay men would prefer to be dead.

    • Mark Y

Eh? Come on James!, some gay men want to be dead because they have to tell people they’re gay? Maybe in parts of Africa, or the Middle East where it’s illegal. But what’s cruel about asking someone if they’re gay in the West. Beside, usually when you get interviewed on Parky, it means you’re not really struggling, well not in the sense that the majority struggle, it’s more a case of what colour Ferrari should I buy kind of struggle. And agreeing to go on Parky is not really the sort of guy who doesn’t want to discuss his private life in public. He’ll probably be bringing a book out soon in which he openly discusses his private life – £15 in hardback from Amazon. com

  • lee

Could care if his gay straight -his a nice looking lad and a great swimmer thats all I need to know. I hate people are force to be outed

  • nikkih777

I think if he is gay, he will be a great role model for gay kids to know that they can be a success in life.

    • lit per

He’s a role model for self-hater. He destroyed his career and himself because he could never accept his sexuality.

  • Daniel

This sort of gutter-trash gossip column I’d expect from one of the red-tops. Why is Pinknews, the self-proclaimed “largest gay news service in Europe” dealing in this rubbish.
Pinknews, stick to reporting on genuine news that affects the LGBT community, and leave this sort of gossip trash to the comics.

  • doug

Maybe he has been watching Tom Daley. He also denied it for ages.

  • dave

    He’s probably met someone.

    • Leonard Woodrow

I hope so, because it will give him the lift he needs. Life ain’t much if you need a partner can’t find one. Some people are quite happy as loners, but he obviously isn’t.

  • Jeremy Wright

This isn’t news, I am sorry. If he weren’t famous, good looking, educated and well turned out nobody would care. And frankly whether he is gay or not doesn’t change him, the whole point of equality is the right to be who you are and not be judged adversely. You shouldn’t have to “come out” whether that be on live television or elsewhere and what net difference does it make. Are gay Australians really going to stop being or become more gay because Ian Thorpe tells them he likes guys?

It’s sad this is really an issue, it’s sad we’re publicising it and it’s probably even sadder for him. Give it a rest.

  • Ivan

I really don’t care if a public figure is gay/straight.

If they refuse to talk about it, then it’s no ones business. – as with Jodi Foster and Anderson Cooper (until recently that is)

Now if they are presenting a false life of being str8 and constantly claim that they are not gay, when they are living a gay life in private, then they should be challenged on the topic.

  • Brian Apple

Why don’t the gay Fascists leave Ian alone? If he doesn’t want to be recruited to the “gay poster child” cause, I don’t see why he should have to be. A lot of you gay guys are pathetic individuals who seek validation in public figures as you cower behind your computers.

    • lit per

Poor self-hater, go back to your nursing home and don’t poop your pants!

      • Brian Apple

Nobody cares about gays who cower behind their computers. Is there a bottle of amyl handy?

        • Daniel Howard

Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. ;)

        • lit per

          Take your meds.

  • Bazz in OZ

Ian get on with your life and stop whinging !!

  • Alexander Kelso Shiels

Lets just put it about that “Humans and Animals have the potentual to be etheir, o stop spouting ye or ne”

  • Sean

I don’t understand why everyone is slamming PinkNews for running a story about a famous person possibly coming out. Ian has setup the interview or agreed to a request for it, so why is it not noteworthy. If Ian talks about his sexuality in the interview and he comes out then that is great, if he is straight then that is great. But I think anytime anyone comes out, of some kind of celebrity, it helps someone. Even if it just helps that one kid on that one day that he was thinking of taking his life and doesn’t because he looked up to Ian as a role model then it in my opinion is all worth it.

    • David H

The reason I’ve been criticising them, Sean, is because there is no news to report yet. They’re simply running an ad/trailer for Parkinson. Ian is an excellent role model, as you rightly say – irrespective of whether he is gay or straight, I just think PN should be reporting on what is said (i.e. after the interview) rather than telling us that he’s going to address the issue in an upcoming interview.

      • Sean

I understand your point. But don’t you think that they should report that it is coming up so that the people know and can tune in to watch if they wish?
