Mrs Brown’s Boys star Rory Cowan has said that he regularly receives wedding proposals from women, despite being gay and playing a gay character.

Cowan, who plays Mrs Brown’s gay son Rory Brown on the show, told the Irish Mirror he was proposed to by two women on a tour of Australia.

He said: “We were in Sydney and one girl said, ‘Can I have your hand?’, I thought she just wanted to shake my hand.

“But she got down on one knee and she said she wanted to propose marriage to me.

“I said to her, ‘Dear, have you seen the show? What I’m doing is not the Stanislavski school of method acting, I’m actually playing a part that is pretty close to me’.

“She said, ‘I understand that but I really think the two of us could be very happy together’.

“I had to say, ‘I’m sorry but that wouldn’t be for me’.”

“We were somewhere else and there was this big woman standing up on someone’s car.

“She had a T-shirt on with a picture of me. It said, ‘Rory please marry me, I beg you’.

“I eventually got over to her and said, ‘Are you joking?’, and she said, ‘No. We’d be very happy together’.”

Earlier this year, Irish broadcaster RTE came under fire for the negative portrayal of a transgender character in sitcom The Centre.
