The creators of upcoming video game Sunset Overdrive have said they will allow players to be “a dude in a skirt” if they choose to.

Insomniac Games – who are making the open-world action game for Xbox One – were responding to a question today about inclusivity and female characters.

Community manager Brandon Winfrey said in a video blog: “Self-expression is super important to us.

“You can be female, you can be male, you can be different skin tones and body types. All the clothing is gender neutral.

“If you want to be a dude in skirt, you can be a dude in a skirt. Just be who you want to be.”

It was announced last week at E3 that the game will be released in October.

Last week, the creators of popular Japanese simulator series Harvest Moon said they would ‘look into’ adding a same-sex marriage mechanic into a future instalment in the series, after pressure from LGBT fans.

Nintendo came under fire earlier this year for a similar reason, when it said it would not include same-sex relationships in its upcoming simulator game, Tomodachi Life.

However, after rebukes from GLAAD and fans of the series, they said in a statement: “We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life.

“We pledge that if we create a next instalment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all player.
