UK Government rules out easing restrictions on gay men giving blood

  • Fordicus

Has anyone ever done a study to see if the incidence of Hep B in gay men who report that they are in monogamous relationships is lower than the incidence in gay men in general? Surely that would be the logical thing to do!

  • Mark Y

Do they stop black africans from giving blood? 36% of those with HIV are black african, but constitute only 2% of the population. And as London has 42% of the HIV population, but only 12% of UK population, are Londoners banned too? No thought not. It’s just one group who are banned from giving blood.

I’ve had 1 monogamous partner for 16 years, why should I be treated worse than a heterosexual who has a different partner every weekend?

      Couldn’t agree more

Does the same rule apply to single heterosexuals who have unprotected sex and considered to be safe donors because of their orientation?

  • Guest

Quite few heterosexuals engage is anal sex too. Are they restricted in any way???

    • JD

No – and BTW |Virginal penetration without a condom is a huge risk to the woman – and given how wholly unsuccessful campaigns have been to get so called ‘Real’ men to put one on – I know with certainty that Heterosexual risk is as great…..

Wonder what would happen if they instituted a ban on heterosexuals for 12 months after sex? Its ridiculous my partner and I don’t sleep with other men, we have both been for tests in the past. Where is the risk?

  • Jake

Risk is about behaviour rather than sexuality. Most gay men have been vaccinated against Hep B. Why does this part of the NHS fail to understand that?

    • JD

usually because the people in these departments know little about HIV and make decisions based on homophobic bigotry, because of their backward superstitions – and ignorance!

I give blood all the time as been informed by nurses that it gets tested first before anything and as normal they will destroy and contact you if it comes back as positive for anything, I know I’m clean aswell as have a regular mot of blood tests. Iv been giving blood since I was 16 yo and am now 23yo and have a male partner, there are a lot of nurses that agree with me that it is wrong as there is always a shortage and they won’t let people that are willing to help by donate but moan that they don’t have sufficient amount

Gay men (and women) want to be a helpful part of the community, and not just seen as mincing queens with bad clothes and a wild sex life. Its not true, in the majority of cases anyway. We have wanted to give blood for years and its tested as hetrosexual blood is to ensure that the donation is pure of infections which may be harmful. For gods sake, there is a shortage of that and bone marrow that we could help to ease. Let us help – we want to give something back to the country and people just the same as anybody else who donates does. LET US BE A USEFUL PART OF SOCIETY.

    Especially cruel to monogamous couples…

I think we need to pick our battles carefully.

This is proving to be farcical. Either they institute the ban across everyone or no-one. One would hope that the blood is tested.

I have to conclude that the UK government officially believes that HIV is a GAY mens virus – because clearly No one who ‘claims’ to be heterosexual is being victimized by this gross ‘uninformed’ attitude – There are 38 million human beings affected by HIV – There is only a small global percentage who are GAY – or are closet self loathers who now have to be defined as MSM (pathetic) –

So what you gonna do about protecting everyone from liars, and African misoginists who actually believe that raping a virgin will cure you!!!!

WAKE UP UK GOVERNMENT the blood is ALL tested anyway

it is absolutely disgusting in a country so forward as ours, and understanding about sexuality being down to nature that they still feel hiv is a gay mans diseases, the fact it started with black people having sex with monkeys in africa, i am a married man and do not sleep around and nor does my husband and we have been tested and immunised from hepatitis, we are healthy and sti free, like i have been all my life and yet still can not give blood but the lass down the street that has had over 15 sexual partners this week alone goes and gives blood regular but her bloods safe n ours aint :/ on what planet is she safer than us
