A department store in Spain has caused outrage by selling parent guides to preventing homosexuality in children.

Spain’s biggest department store chain El Corte Inglés are selling three books titled ‘Gender confusion in childhood’, ‘I want to stop being gay’ and ‘How to prevent homosexuality’.

Two of the books feature young boys on the front cover. The American author is Joseph Nicolosi, a leading advocate for gay conversion therapy.

El Corte Inglés now faces a backlash, with many Spaniards taking to twitter to express their anger at the fourth biggest department store group in the world.

A petition setup to remove the books from shelves has been signed by 19,000 people.

State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Trangenders and Bisexuals (SFLGTB) spokesperson Uge Sangil said: “You can’t cure homosexuality, the World Health Organization has said so more than once.”

“It’s not just the parents and the children who have to learn about sexual diversity and tolerance, the country’s education system and the people behind it need to promote these values.”

“Spain has come a long way in terms of legal rights for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals, but on a social scale there’s still plenty to do.”

Nicolosi is credited with creating reparative therapy, the controversial ‘gay cure’  that seeks to force men into traditional masculine roles to rid them of homosexuality.

His books are also sold on Amazon. ‘Gender confusion in childhood’ in the product description is summed up as ‘This guide offers parents hope for all those seeking to establish the foundation of a proper heterosexual identity in their children.’

El Corte Inglés is yet to comment.
