Department store sparks outrage by selling ‘how to prevent gay children’ books

  • Mark Y

Another bigoted catholic publishes books which have been translated for bigoted catholics in Spain.

Shame on the department store. I wonder if they sell skin bleaching cream for black people who want to look like they’re white.

    • Steven Gregory

      Excellent comment.

You can choose to turn your eyes from blue to brown with the aid of coloured contact lenses. You can choose to attend ‘reparative therapy’. But in both cases, you are still as nature intended. This sad closet case is obviously fooling himself that he really does have brown eyes …..

So really, what’s new? Haven’t they been selling the IDEA for as long as most of us have been alive? The new thing is that people are actually objecting and know it won’t work. When I was a kid they denied gay people existed and it was impossible for a child to be gay. So this is progress…or a sort. Seriously, it’s crazy that they would actually do this, but it isn’t exactly a new thing,it’s a new effort in an old game.

    • Steven Gregory

I was at a dramatic table reading for a stage play in progress and in the second scene the protagonist is 12, three years before he came out. He and his mom are in a restaurant and three men are in the booth behind them talking loudly about queer this and fag that. The 12-year-old boy voices that he thinks he’s doing a great job not being noticeably shaken, when his mom gets up and goes to the table, and says,
“I am here with my 12-year-old son, watch your mouths…” and as one guy starts to ask her pardon, she continues, “…we have gay and lesbian friends and loved ones, and what you are saying are lies, and you know it. I don’t want my son to listen to this bu||shit. Shame on you loudmouth liars.”

She sits down and her son addresses the audience, “I was so proud of my mom, but I wasn’t ready to come out yet. But I knew I could.”

      • Philip Marks

Steven…yes THAT is what’s new! (at least to an old guy like me…) And isn’t it great!!

  • Cal

They will end up removing it. El Corte Inglés is the Spanish version of John Lewis or Neiman Marcus. I’m sure this has just slipped through. A book like this is a disgrace and will just help bigoted parents torture their vulnerable children.

    • Steven Gregory

Thank you for bringing up the store chain,
Email addresses for customer service (e-commerce and stores) are:
      servicio_clientes@elcorteingles.es,
      clientes@elcorteingles.es

This is the email I sent:
Dear Management for El Corte Inglés,
. . . . . I ran across an article telling of a bigoted and potentially harmful books being sold in your stores. You may wish to reject these publications and notify the press of your decision. The books are called ‘Gender Confusion In Childhood’, ‘I Want To Stop Being Gay’ and ‘How To Prevent Homosexuality’.
. . . . . Two of the books feature young boys on the front cover. The American author is Joseph Nicolosi, a leading advocate for gay conversion therapy, which has been debunked and rejected by official psychiatric authorities in the United Kingdom, United States, and numerous other nations.
. . . . . It would be unfortunate if providing retail distribution for such denounced practices placed El Corte Inglés in peril of litigation or discouraged shoppers from patronizing your stores.
      . . . . . Here is a link to the article I read: http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2014/06/17/department-store-sparks-outrage-by-selling-how-to-prevent-gay-children-books/

      • Cal

Well done, Steven. I will write, too.

  • Steven Gregory

Too bad this idiot author isn’t concerned with raising children who are non-violent, constructive, resilient, honest, cooperative and compassionate. But of course these are human qualities that the majority of conservatives do not value over aggression and control.

    • Philip Marks

Yeah, but that doesn’t sell books, and it’s really hard work to become a person who would have something to say or offer to others that would produce that kind of outcome. You’d have to actually live the life of a person who is non-violent, constructive, resilient, honest, cooperative and compassionate to have credibility.
It’s much easier to live the life of someone who doesn’t have gay children. Well until one comes out. And even then you can say “well I didn’t know when Iwas raising her, what I’m about to sell you now…”

      • Steven Gregory

I’m reminded of a line from the movie WEEKEND, when the two lead characters are discussing coming out: “I told my parents ‘Nature’ or ‘nurture,’ it’s totally your fault that I’m gay.'”

Last night I saw the documentary GORE VIDAL: THE UNITED STATES OF AMNESIA (brilliant, by the way), and one of his quotes is: “Parents are often shocked when they see their adult children, because they expected to be looking at themselves.”

Gay and lesbian (and transgender, and gender non-conforming) children may be very shocking to parents who expected to fulfill their failed aspirations vicariously through their children.

  • CHBrighton

Nicolosi is a very unpleasant purveyor of anti-gay rhetoric disguised as respectably psychology. His organisation, NARTH (beloved of our enemies on this side of the Atlantic such as Core Issues, Anglican Mainstream, Christian Concern etc) pumps out anti-gay material incessantly and holds conferences to further their anti-gay cause. The lie to all this, of course, is that, at root, it is another religious organisation attempting to couch is homophobia in pseudo-science and a heart-on sleeve concern for people who are confused about their sexuality. El Corte Ingles is a reputable organisation. I should be very surprised indeed if the managers are aware of what they have on their shelves and imagine they will remove this book as soon as they discover it.

  • Yesh U R

Madam Nicolosi always looks like he’s just sucked a bad lemon because life has cheated him from being the Grand Duchess he feels at heart he is and should be known for, his put on airs of superiority and his fey ways are really laughable . He is a phony and not a very good one at that. I count down the days until he joins the ranks of other closet LGBT haters like George Rekers who have been outed by the rent boy for a better price. I also hope that he is sued until the pips squeak by the people he has harmed with his hateful nonsense.

    • REALrenovato

Yes, he does convey that pained expression of just have tasted something bitter the interview with Steven Fry conveys him perfectly and condemns him from his own mouth.

      • Rumbelow

Excellent, thank you for the link, I’d say Nicolosi is getting off talking with teenage boys about their sexuality, he’s just creepy and he’s got parents delivering their gay teenage sons to him to be abused.

    • Truth

He’s OBVIOUSLY a sad, self-loather who just cannot accept his own homosexuality. He’s fooling himself that he’s been ‘cured’ when, in fact, every major psychological body in the civilised world says homosexuality is not an ‘illness’, so cannot be ‘cured’. If only the religious brainwashing this man has suffered could be undone, he may just stand a chance of happiness and can then stop damaging others with his ‘cure’ nonsense.

      • http://www.bloketoys.co.uk/ BlokeToys.co.uk

Indeed, if anything needs to be cured it’s the religious delusions of individuals and their insane desperation to inflict their doctrine on the rest of decent society.

It’s worth remembering that religious conviction is declining massively right now. Hopefully within a couple of generations Christianity, Islam and Catholicism will be no more prevalent in (our) society than $cientology. The youth are basically rejecting this nonsense more so than they have before, so this is a positive thing to remember.

Innitially one thing which troubled me about a statement in the article was “It’s not just the parents and the children who have to learn about sexual diversity and tolerance, the country’s education system and the people behind it need to promote these values.”

Whilst I understand the core intent of the statement, as factual as the comment is I would prefer Inform, enlighten or advocate be used instead of “Promote” With so much anti gay hate propaganda in the world, there is an inherent danger of any quote being misinterpreted when the word promote is used in reference to homosexuality or tolerance.

Further, I applaud Steven for his email for to the store chain! but as I read on other comments all express concern about the retailer selling the book. But little has been said questioning any outrage for the publisher/distributor surely they are are equally deserving of criticism.

As I tried to search information on the publisher, I found this article which indicated the book/s are currently available at “La Casa del Libro” bookstore and on Amazon.

Lets be open and honest , I think most parents don’t want a gay child , but mother nature, god or whatever gives them one . Most parents who think they have a gay might buy the book esp if they are religious . Their motives are not of hate . but out of love to protect their child and not be stigmatized by society.. It’s only when they come to terms with have a cute , cool , fashion trend setter , hip guy or girl that will always give cool dinner parties , expensive gifts to Mum and Dad . Will always been there in their old age . They realise that we gay offspring are a true blessing from Heaven in disguise !

“Their motives are not of hate . but out of love to protect their child and not be stigmatized by society.” Who exactly is this ‘society’? We are ALL part of ‘society’. Therefore, we ALL – especially parents – have a duty to change the attitudes which could harm our offspring. Are you really saying parents should just accept hatred and bigotry for their kids because that’s what ‘society’ says we must accept? Sounds decidedly cowardly and defeatist to me …..

‘…It’s only when they come to terms with have a cute , cool , fashion trend setter , hip guy or girl that will always give cool dinner parties , expensive gifts to Mum and Dad…’

do parents have to be that shallow to appreciate gay offspring?

    • http://www.bloketoys.co.uk/ BlokeToys.co.uk

Nope, I don’t agree at all.
Parenting requires unconditional love, and if that cannot be delivered for religious excuses then that person does not have a right to be a parent.

Any adult who places a belief in a magical sky wizard over the best interests of their own child should not be permitted to raise that child.

I cannot understand for one moment how any adult could deliberately emotionally and psychologically damage their child in such a way, based on the imagined opinions of an imaginary deity.

Gay kids come from straight parents so the logical way to prevent kids from being gay is to: a) shoot all heterosexual parents on the off chance that their kid might be gay, or b) abortion. Now we know how silly that sounds so a word to these Christians…listen to yourselves and the crap you spout. Books like this breed child abuse.

If you cannot have cake, spending time with people talking about their love of cake and experiences eating it, is the next best thing I guess.

Has not escaped my attention all these so called ex-gay conversion experts are all men who for some reason specialize in working only young gay men. It’s probably a fetish come true for these hypocritical perverts who profit from inflicting pain on others….wait mainly young men. They don’t get it up for the women.

    how to prevent gay children?
