Singapore: Government condemns Goldman Sachs for holding LGBT dinner

  • Leonard Woodrow

Justice and equality are bound to be resented in some retrograde societies, but my congratulations to these banks for giving their support to a long oppressed minority.

  • Cal

    Well done Goldman Sachs!

  • Dennis

Well done Goldman Sachs! Shame on the government of Singapore, shameful country.

  • Ian Tom Bower

Congratulations to G.S. even though I loathe what they get up to.

  • David Greensmith

    Good for Goldman Sachs.

  • Second Mouse

Singapore is a disgusting country. Boycott Singapore. It is a stain on the developed world.

    • Truth

I hope Goldman Sachs takes its money and goes home – along with all other inclusive organisations. People like this vile homophobe need to be taught a lesson. And the only language they understand is a swift kick where it really hurts… in the pocket.

      • Rex

Agreed. But will any foreign capitalist institutions do this? Should G/S lead the fight against sexism in Singapore? I doubt they are the correct leader.

      • RedDevil9

I agree, that’s exactly what they should do. The problem is that it’s the gay people in Singapore who will likely get blamed for it all if they do leave, rather than the government of Singapore.

  • Darule Vozhak

International banks have often been a refuge for LGBTQ workers in oppressive countries due to these banks having global codes of conduct and non-discrimination enshrined in their employment practice. There will always be friction when international firms have policies that do not mesh with local laws and often these companies are forced to shy away from their core values under threat of losing operating license, however I am glad to see the big banks sticking to their policies, Singapore cannot hope to be a rival financial hub to NY and London if it continues on its current discriminatory path.

  • Jeremy Wright

Actually, we read this incorrectly. If one looks at what the Singapore Minister has said, he does not believe in any discrimination including that on the basis of sexual orientation. That is a landmark shift for Singapore for a top elected official to say that on record. The context in which the remarks are taken is unfortunate, but if leverage could be applied to lift the restriction in the penal code, on the basis of what the SG minister has said, that would make a big difference for LGBTs in Singapore.

    • lit per

      Stop defending these homophobic monkeys!

    • Second Mouse

You’re kidding right? Singapore is one of the most homophobic countries in the world. Singaporeans are a pretty disgusting bunch of morons who revel in their ignorance and bigotry. They are PROUD of their bigotry. They are the Nazis of Asia, except that they are far more stupid than your average Nazi. Their national pastime is persecuting gay people. If you know anything about Singapore, know this. THEY ARE THE MOST DISGUSTING PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.

      • Rehan

Really? As bad as Iran, Saudi, Uganda? How is it then that, for example, the Wild Rice theatre company was able to put on an adaptation of Singapore’s first gay novel Johann S Lee’s Peculiar Chris ‘way back in 2007, the opening of which was attended by more than one official?

Singapore might have a long way to go yet, but let’s not get hysterical about it.

        • Second Mouse

Oops! Rehan you sly fox. I see what you did there. Okay. Let me be less hysterical. SINGAPORE IS THE MOST DISGUSTING DEVELOPED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. And slightly better than Uganda and Iran. Mainly because its citizens love their Gucci so much they don’t dare to actually throw their gay citizens in jail because then all the white people would leave the country. But I hate duplicity. I despise apologists for injustice and undoubtedly you are one of those duplicitous, apologetic and sebaceous expats in Singapore who benefit sufficiently from its preferential treatment of foreigners while cruising suicidal gay boys at Cruise Club. So much that you would gladly defend discrimination and sell out the rights of gay people. You can take your fecal excuse for a life and shove it back where it belongs, moron.

          • Rehan

Sebaceous, forsooth! My, my – gilding the assumptions and personal attacks with the brightest aluminium foil, I see. Not that it’s any of your business, dear Mouse 2, but I’m neither Singaporean nor an “ex-pat” (more accurately known as “economic migrant”), nor have I even spent more than a night there, ages ago. But a friend of mine was involved with the theatre adaptation I mentioned which suggests that, however bad things are, it’s somewhat unbalanced to compare Singapore with Iran or Uganda, where people are being murdered for being gay, or even Serbia or Russia.

I dislike childish overstatement and deranged SHOUTING as well as duplicity.

          • Second Mouse

The reason why people in Singapore are not murdered for being gay is that people in Singapore are rarely murdered. Your analysis of the situation is stupid. I’m somewhat sorry for taking a dump all over some nostalgic memory of some Madame Butterfly trick you pulled in Singapore years ago but I’m not sorry that you are so stupid that you think some ridiculous pillow talk of an anecdote represents the true scale of LGBT oppression in this cesspool. Hey and guess what moron. If you are not an expat or a Singaporean then you are even less qualified to speak on behalf of Singapore let alone participate in the oppression Olympics that is a lived reality of life in the sewer of Asia.

          • Rehan

‘Madam Butterfly’, Japanese? How racist. No ‘pillow talk’, my poor wee rodent, not everything is centred on sex, you know. Your imagination is as overwrought as your anger, and whatever good points you may have made are lost, since you end up just sounding petulant and rather silly. I feel sorry for you.

          • Second Mouse

Shut up and face facts. Singapore is a barbaric cesspool because it’s citizens are the scum of Asia and the children of coolies. They have created one of the most disgusting societies on earth and with a smiling face and only a moron who does not have to live there would have anything nice to say about it. There are other third world countries worth your time and energy. Not Singapore. So shut up and go back to your life free from oppression and indignity and leave the rest of us to stew in our hatred ok pal?

And in case you feel like forgetting what really happened in 2007, here is a classic video to remind you of what went down. I doubt that gay Singaporeans care about a theatre production as much as they care about NOT BEING CRIMINALS.

      • bad2bad

why are you so vile towards singaporean did a ladyboy rape you or did she turn you down? you sent me a reply saying i was some dumb coolie but i am from canada living in singapore which is paradise compared to the west.

        • Second Mouse

Singaporeans make me sick with their disgusting hypocrisy. If you are an expat there then of course you love it since they all lick your boots and you get all the suicidal gay boys flinging themselves at you eh? Nice work mister. You are right Singaporeans have no shame their women are loose and slutty but they pretend to be conservative. Disgusting people and disgusting country. The worst country on earth.

          • bad2bad

i am an expat and am asian. singapore isn’t the greatest place to live but it is far from being the worst. it certainly is a convenient place to work. i certainly wouldn’t call them coolies or ugly as singaporean girls are cute and people there are better educated than most westerners. i have lived all over asia and the west, it beats the hell out of places like detroit or HK or ….. it is obvious you are gay but not all of us are so we dont want gay boys flinging themselves at us. that is in fact one of the big drawbacks of life in singapore too many gays there always getting accosted in the gym by gays trying to step into the shower with you.

          • bad2bad

You have revealed your own homophobia in your post idiot. I should point out that gay boys in Singapore have more right to be there than you do. But you have been in Singapore for so long that your straight privilege enables you to spout homophobic nonsense like every other Singaporean. You make me sick. Singapore is the only country where gay people are smugly disenfranchised through clever little anecdotes that morons like you pass around like candies.

          • bad2bad

being gay doesnt give you the right to walk into a shower cubicle with a stranger you dont know at a gym. i am not the only person those has happened to either. gays in singapore think everyplace they hang out is a gay sauna. i do that to a woman i go to jail. my guess you are a gay westerner refused visa in singapore (did you fail the HIV test).

          • Second Mouse

Oooh so that’s why you are here huh? To spread your typically Singaporean, anecdotal, hateful anti-gay bigotry all over the internet? Because the one time you got hit on in the gym you decided that gays don’t deserve equal treatment? Well perhaps if gay people in Singapore could live openly then they wouldn’t have to cruise each other at gyms like 1950s gay men in NYC pre-Stonewall. I’m glad you are here with your vile posts showing everyone just what the typical Singaporean feels about gay people. You do realise this is a gay site yes?

Only fools, morons and idiots say crap like “westerner”. You know what you are? You are a typical Asian expat who came to Singapore because hey you get to live the expat life without getting racism shoved in your face. Because no white girls would date a spineless idiot like you in Canada. It worked out well huh and plus Singapore women (and you know, you have pretty low standards if you think they are cute) throw themselves in your face because they’re all hoping you’ll whisk them away to Canada when your job here is done.

You belong in Singapore. You belong with those hypocritical coolies floating around in your smugness. Stay there and rot.

          • bad2bad

did you try to cruise someone in a gym and they punched you in the face??? is that why you think singapore is so anti-gay because you couldn’t get someone to bend you over? you call me homophobic but what do you call someone who repeatedly refers to asians as coolies and ugly ???

          • Second Mouse

Not Asians. Only Singaporeans. You deserve every ounce of vitriol that comes your way. You guys are disgusting. Go back to your cesspool to sleaze it up with those tarty bleached hair Singaporean women who have been used by expats all around the world. An eye for an eye. As you treat gay people, so shall you be treated by the rest of the world scumbag.

          • bad2bad

i don’t know which upsets you more no guy tried to take you in the gym or you hate the singaporean girls for making it with guys you wanted to hook up with. you got a lot of hate in you.

And finally, can I just point out it is a VERY SINGAPOREAN TACTIC to smear gay people all the time by claiming they got cruised in a gym. Of course they all fail to mention that the flip side is that straight Singaporeans love public sex and there are lots of sites where you can find pictures of Singaporean chicks having sex in public. Women who love stripping off in public and female bloggers who enjoy sleeping with lots of men in the stairwells of public flats. And that, my friends, is true-blue authentic and uniquely Singaporean hypocrisy for you.

  • Rex

This is just dumb. If a country is not ready to embrace LGBT rights on a social level, it is not the responsibility of capitalists to cause trouble. Hosting such an event is quite counterproductive to the LGBT community – it identifies them.
Singapore has a lot of problems to handle with regards to immigration, racial tension, and economic inequality. Throwing LGBT into the mix is not helping. Not saying that the rights of LGBT should be ignored in Singapore, but this is definitely not a recommended method in a country as socially sensitive as Singapore.

    • Riondo

So how should it be done? Or are you really just saying it shouldn’t be done, full stop?

      • Rex

First of all, I apologize for my harsher judgment of this issue earlier. I should not have used “dumb.”

To Truth: No, people should not shut themselves in the closet and accept things. There are better ways to do this. It is not the responsibility of a foreign capitalist institution to change Singapore – it reeks of Orientalism. Goldman Sachs should be applauded for its championship of the Singaporean LGBT community, but it should not make thus the basis of hiring in Singapore. Being a good guest is not to subvert the rules of the hosting and sovereign state to your business – it is disrespectful.

Riondo: It should be done. What do you propose? I ask myself the same question: what can you do to change a society that is brought up to be non-sympathetic to LGBT community? Singapore is a meritocratic and consumerist society. The viable option is to let people see that a person of any gender and sexual orientation is similarly accomplished, if not more accomplished citizens. Of transgenders I met they were dropouts and models of bad social behavior. Although a singular case, I was bullied by a group of transgenders as when I was eight years old in public. Discrimination is no doubt a cause, but not all. Until LGBT community steps up and show Singaporeans that they are equally excellent high achievers, stigma against them would continue. And it’s not a fortunate thing.

Look at the U.S. – only recently have football players come out as gay – and they are wholly accepted because they proved themselves.

        • Second Mouse

There are many successful LGBT Singaporeans. They won’t come out of the closet because IT IS ILLEGAL TO BE GAY. IT IS CRIMINAL TO BE GAY.

Homosexuality was decriminalised in many countries BEFORE successful people came out of the closet. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why.

You are obviously a moron who is trolling for Singapore. Grow a brain, get a life, shut your pie hole and just get lost please. Nobody needs Singapore and you guys are just a bunch of disgusting bigots.

          • Rehan

Of course decriminalisation is the goal. But it was illegal to be gay (if male) in New Zealand until 1985 and that still didn’t stop some men being openly gay.

          • Second Mouse

Well gay men were entrapped by policemen and flogged in Singapore in the 1990s. I would describe this gruesome procedure in greater detail but it makes me want to throw up. There is your simple answer moron. Now isn’t there some I Love North Korea page that you should be trolling?

          • Rehan

There isn’t the slightest reason for me to take anyone who ‘argues’ (to put it kindly) as you do here seriously. Grow up.

    • Truth

That’s right. People should just be forced to stay in the closet and accept that they are second class citizens. What a sad, self-loathing attitude you have …..

      • Rex

Attempting sarcasm or trashing other commentators is not tantamount to a good discussion. Thanks for your comment anyway.

        • Second Mouse

Rex is some idiot paid off by Singapore to go around defending their bigotry. Nice try Rex woof woof woof, but you stink AND THAT’S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STAY IN A CESSPOOL FOR TOO LONG.

    • Hue-Man

“Singapore has a lot of problems to handle with regards to immigration, racial tension, and economic inequality.”

Where I live – and where 12,190 Singapore-born people live – we don’t look at immigration as a problem. We welcome 250,000 new immigrants every year often from the same countries that this commenter sees as causing Singapore problems. Part of that bargain is to stop your home-country “racial tensions” and treat them and everybody else as you would want to be treated. Sure, there are occasional examples although I’m hard-pressed to name them (probably having to do with Israel-Palestine).
Not coincidentally, we also have probably the widest-ranging LGBT laws in the world. If LGBT issues are such a problem, why aren’t all these hyper-sensitive people racing back to their homelands? Singaporeans, Malaysians, South Asians, Chinese, Filipinos, etc.? Maybe Singapore is one of those magical nations that has no gay people!

      • Rex

I am glad to hear that you don’t feel that immigration is a problem. As an immigrant myself, I experienced racism in secondary school (people would call me “Chinaman”). It is great to hear that there are people like yourself that welcome immigrants and believe in a relationship based on virtue and courtesy.

I would be confounded (or maybe I should be?) if the government kept discriminatory laws even though a majority of the people did not want them. Admittedly controversial, Singaporeans are frightened by Singapore’s mainstream media, which consciously differentiates Singapore from the “corruption” of American or western liberalism. A foreign capitalist institution subverting the government is precisely what the government disagrees with.

I believe parents want their children to have the best chances, and it happens that being LGBT does not give you the best chance in Singapore. Thus, “being LGBT” is discouraged no matter how ridiculous that sounds. That has to change – agreed – but not through Goldman Sachs.

    • Steven Gregory

Do you really think gay men — who according to the article are criminalized, not lesbians — were unaware of the risks of attending such an event?

An LGBT mixer is business as usual for G/S and I’m sure they realized any difficulties. Nobody was forced to attend. The archaic law is now challenged: will Singapore move against G/S and its employees, and risk backlash from the banking community?

      • Rex

I admire the brave men and women who will attend this event. As much as I admire them, I still think that Goldman Sachs as the “savior” role is not the way to go.

If you looked at how Singapore dealt with inequality issues, the government instilled a “self-sufficient” mentality within Singaporeans, i.e. no one owes each other a living. But then, inequality is inevitable in a capitalist society! Singapore deals with this by helping to set up self-contained, racially differentiated community funds to help the less fortunate. It de-politicizes the whole issue; people help each other because they feel that it’s morally right to give the less fortunate a helping hand, not because it’s a cause for political agitation as G/S had done.

Can we reorient support for the LGBT from this angle by making it a “morally right” thing to do? Yes, we can. But not through G/S’s outward subversion of Singaporean authority. And I doubt G/S will fully back the LGBT on this issue if it threatens their investments or customers. After all, it’s a foreign capitalist institution.

        • Steven Gregory

I don’t at all make the towering event out of this that you have. G/S hosts gay/lesbian mixers at various offices on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. They also host Jewish mixers, women’s mixers, Under-30 and any other group who requests and organizes.

Characterizing G/S as a “savior” is hyperbole. The entire third paragraph is overreach.

          • Rex

You’re right. Perhaps it is best to wait and see what happens next. It’s too early to make a judgment at this point.

  • lit per

    Barbarian chinks.

    • vee

It’s the Evangelical Churches (including the Anglican Church in Singapore) that’s pushing back and the most homophobic. Next are the Malay-Muslim community and RC Church that are against repealing the anti-sodomy law. As you can see, it;s the usual suspects all around the world, from Uganda to the UK and USA. It’s religion! Ethnicity has nothing to do with it.

      • bad2bad

every malay family has one gay in it

    • Steven Gregory

Barbarian would have been enough, but now you’ve expressed yourself as a racist jerk.

    • http://www.derekwilliams.net Derek Williams

Completely inappropriate and racist thing to say.

    • Second Mouse

They are barbarians. Singaporeans are descended from coolies and outcasts from China, so they started off being the undesirable East Asians anyway. It was the British who civilised them but the average Singaporean today is still a coolie at heart. The gene pool is terrible and their alpha females go out looking for white men just so they can emigrate from Singapore and leave this nightmare behind. The birthrate is falling because Singaporean are so ugly they can’t bear to have children with each other. Go to Shanghai, Taipei or Hong Kong and you’ll see people more reflective of a good Chinese gene pool. Singaporeans are renowned for being the most unattractive Asian people on account of their bad genes. They worship money because they use the Ralph Lauren polos and Prada bags as a veil for their ugliness. They abuse foreigners because of their deepest insecurities – they are the offspring of coolies. Barbarians. All swimming in their own cesspool.

  • vee

I’m a Singaporean and it’s utterly shameful that this Minister from the ruling party is condemning Goldman Sachs’ inclusive policy. Singaporean wants to be a regional financial hub in Asia, so it needs Goldman Sachs, Barclays, UBS, etc, not the other way around. Singapore is no more conservative than Taiwan or Hong Kong or Vietnam. It’s an increasingly lame excuse to not repeal the anti-sodomy law, 377A .

    • Craig Young

And my compliments to the courageous and persistent Pink Dot movement which I understand is constantly pressing the Singaporean government to do so.

    • dazzleworth

Any party or organisation that claims Singapore is a “largely conservative society” needs to come out from their cave. It certainly cuts no ice when Muslim women who wear the Hijab to some workplaces are discriminated against, in the name of their modesty.

      • Second Mouse

Hypocrisy. That is the one thing Singapore is good at pimping out. Day in and day out these Singaporean morons peddle their hypocrisy with their ugly smiling coolie faces. It was a cesspool before colonial rule and it is a cesspool today.

  • Truth

How sad that those who were formally oppressed by British colonial rule cannot see the breathtaking hypocrisy of now trying to oppress their own people. Why is it that the formely oppressed so often become the oppressor …?

    • Rehan

Erm – modern Singapore was substantially the creation of the British, you know.

And bullies are usually people who have, in turn, been bullied themselves. Brutality begets brutality. Only very unusual people are capable of breaking that cycle.

      • Second Mouse

Please. This has nothing to do with Britain. Singapore had many chances to do the decent and fair thing and decriminalise homosexuality. It decided to embrace its bigotry and elevate it into a virtue and a cornerstone of its identity and discourse. So now it is a cesspool. Of its own making. It is a cesspool of its own making.

  • LaQueefsta Johnston

At least they weren’t caned like that poor American years ago for throwing a cigarette butt into the street.

    • Jon (Malaysia)

That American wasn’t caned for throwing ciggy butts, he was caned for vandalizing several cars with keys and spray paint causing considerable property damage. I don’t condone Singapore at all but when in Rome…… It is well known that Singapore has draconian punishments. It behooves one to make oneself aware of laws in a country they intend to visit.

      • LaQueefsta Johnston

Singapore is on my bucket of poo list.

  • Peter

The irony is that the are more gay saunas in Singapore than in Sydney. Despite the fact the gay sex is illegal in Singapore there is a vibrant gay life going on there. But of course in Singapore it’s all about money.

there area lot of gays and even transexuals in singapore as there are in most of south east asian countries and for the most part no body cares, what the minister says is just what an old conservative politician for PR most dont bother with it. there may be sodomy laws on the books but not enforced, i only know of one case ever in my time living here and it was a guy who did it to his girlfriend who reported him 6 months later after/because he dumped her. there used to be laws against women giving men blow jobs too but again not enforced though it made the news now and then when some minister said something. you must remember something americans talk about sex a lot but don’t do anything, asians don’t talk about sex a lot but do everything. a lot more goes on in asia than many westerns realize.

I guess this means that Singapore is not interested in our tourist dollars because all my friends will remove them from our vacation destination immediately!

Good for you, and I will do likewise, however as a minority we have little impact. What really bites is when our heterosexual allies join in a boycott.

Where I live, Singapore and Phuket Thailand are equidistant. Guess which one I always choose. Wink wink.

Singapore is also a tax haven, so the government thinks it has ‘extra power’ over individuals in high places around the world. Ban all tax havens. I won’t be holding my breath over that though.

Right – one LGBT event will turn the whole country gay, because you can just pick your sexuality out of the designer rainbow of exotic options and they’re powerless to resist our seductive charms. Got it.
