Nintendo: We pledge to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life sequel
Nintendo has responded to criticism of its decision to exclude same-sex relationships from upcoming game Tomodachi Life.
Nintendo had previously defended the decision to ban same-sex relationships, claiming that the game was a “playful alternate world” and “absolutely not trying to provide social commentary”.
After the harsh reaction, a statement today read: “We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life.
“Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game’s design, and such a significant development change can’t be accomplished with a post-ship patch.
“At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy.
“We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone.
“We pledge that if we create a next instalment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players.”
The game’s Japanese release last year arose controversy after the company removed a glitch allowing male characters to enter same-sex relationships, claiming it was an ‘unintentional, game-breaking bug’.
Although the game is not released in the UK until June 6, a sequel is likely to be made, as it was a huge success in Japan.
