Australia: Rugby player suspended for calling opponent a ‘f***ing gay c**t’
An Australian rugby player has been suspended for two games after calling an opponent a “f***ing gay c**t”.
Previously not named, the player has been revealed as Mitchell Moses, who been banned by the National Rugby League (NRL) for two matches.
The West Tigers under 20s half-back made the comments to Queensland player Luke Bateman during a match on Saturday, prompting the NRL to investigate.
Live viewers of the match heard the slur.
The NSW head of football Todd Greenberg confirmed that Moses attended the Rugby League Central on Monday to apologise. He also said sorry to Bateman.
“The NRL has consistently made it clear that there is no place for any form of discrimination in our game and we will take firm action if it occurs,” said Greenberg.
“The player has accepted responsibility and apologised for his comments, which was taken into consideration in determining the penalty. After careful assessment, we have decided to issue the player with a two-match suspension.
“We will also require him to participate in a program to improve his awareness and understanding of the importance of eliminating discrimination, particularly homophobia, in the game.”
