A Coronation Street actress has said she found the idea of a lesbian on-screen kiss “daunting”, but that she came around to the idea.

Amy Kelly, who plays Maddie Heath, new girlfriend of Sophie Webster in the ITV soap. She joined the show last year.

She said Brooke Vincent, who plays Webster, helped her into the scenes, when she found it strange at first.

Speaking to the Sun, Kelly said: “I’m not a lesbian and it was a bit daunting at first. But just before we filmed it, Brooke said, ‘Do you want me to kiss you first?’ And I said, ‘OK’, because she’s been doing it on screen for years.

“And we had to film that one scene so many times that by the end of the day I’d got used to it.

“Now it doesn’t bother me – I get on so well with Brooke it’s not weird any more.”

The Corrie actress and college student said she is still coming to terms with her newfound fame, and questions that come with it.

She said: “The most frequent questions I’m asked are, ‘Are you really a lesbian?’ ‘Is Brooke really a lesbian?’ ‘Have you met Michelle Keegan?’ and ‘Can I have Michelle’s phone number?’ The answers are ‘No, no, yes and no!'”

Broadcasting regulator Ofcom earlier this year confirmed that it would not investigate Coronation Street over dozens of complaints made about a gay kiss.

The kiss, between Todd Grimshaw, played by Bruno Langley and Marcus Dent, by Charlie Condou, took place in an episode of the ITV soap in February.
