A US federal appeals panel has reversed an earlier decision to force the state to recognise the marriages of three Tennessee gay couples.

Judge Aleta Trauger last month placed a preliminary injunction against the state’s same-sex marriage ban.

The ruling came after three Tennessee same-sex couples married out of state filed a lawsuit asking the state to recognise their same-sex marriages.

On Friday the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati put the temporary injunction on hold, stating that “the law in this area is so unsettled.”

The court also stated that the state’s appeal against the injunction should go to an expedited hearing.

Both a law passed in 1998 and a constitutional amendment passed in 2006, ban same-sex marriage in Tennessee.

The state’s attorney general is currently assessing how to defend the laws.
