Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe says Europe should keep its “homosexual nonsense” and that he will not tolerate discussions about the subject by foreign diplomats.

The 90-year-old Zanu-PF leader delivered an hour-long speech to tens of thousands of supporters at Harare’s National Sports Stadium on Friday.

“Europe is full of lies. Europe of yesterday is gone that Europe of today has no principles,” said Mugabe who continues to face EU sanctions.

“Europe will never ever accept a Zanu-PF government in this country.”

He also accused the West of promoting gay rights in Africa.

“Let Europe keep their homosexual nonsense there and live with it. We will never have it here. The act [homosexuality] is not humane,” Mugabe said. “Any diplomat who talks about homosexuality will be kicked out. There is no excuse and we won’t listen to them.”

In March, Mugabe defended Uganda’s anti-gay legislation by saying it’s a “human right” for men to marry women.

The month before, in a significant move, a Zimbabwean magistrate threw out a case by the country’s government against Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ).

The government had accused it of operating as an “unregistered” organisation.

However, a ruling in favour of the organisation was upheld.

In Friday’s speech, Mugabe reiterated claims GALZ had been recruiting followers from the country’s colleges and universities
