Robin Roberts, co-host of Good Morning America, has dismissed the idea she should have come out sooner by saying, “Some people like their anonymity”.

The TV anchor acknowledged publicly for the first time her long-standing relationship with Amber Laign in December last year.

In an interview to Good Housekeeping, Roberts said: “News flash: Some people like their anonymity. This is what’s right for me. Love is love, and I’m grateful to have that. Sometimes there’s a stigma attached to how people view you if you’re living a certain way. But I don’t care — you gotta live your life. You gotta find what happiness is and what it means for you, and you can’t get caught up in what someone is saying about you on Twitter. You don’t go through a year like I did to not be happy and not make your own choices.”

Roberts is a household name in the US, having co-anchored ABC’s Good Morning America since 2005.

She began her career in 1983 as a sports anchor and reporter in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Born in Alabama, Roberts grew up in Pass Christian, Mississippi, where she played basketball and tennis at college before embarking full-time into broadcasting.

It was Roberts whom President Barack Obama chose in May 2012 for his landmark interview to acknowledge his support for equal marriage.
