Malta: Labour Party flies rainbow flag on eve of civil unions vote

  • Lettice Protheroe

I have spent the last 31 years with my Maltese partner, we have spent a lot of time on the island and i have to say i NEVER thought we would get to this point. Its an amazing place full of wonderful people i so hope the right decision is made.

The vote in Malta’s House of Representatives (Parliament) was 37 in favor (= all but 2 members of the Labour Party), 0 against, and 30 abstentions (= all members of the Nationalist Party). Gender-neutral civil unions will be equivalent in substance to different-gender civil marriage.

One member of the Labour Party, George Vella, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, was out of the country on official business and therefore could not vote. He is known to be a supporter of marriage quality. It is not clear who the other non-voting member was, who belongs to the same party.

“Equal Human Rights and Civil Rights for All Persons, No Matter Their Gender, No Matter Their Sexual Orientation: A Newsletter” (humciv.com) contains a 7500-word discussion of the events in Malta.
