Mormon leaders: God will always be opposed to ‘redefining marriage’
A senior member of the Mormon church has reaffirmed that God is opposed to ‘redefining’ marriage to include same-sex couples.
Speaking at the church’s spring conference in Salt Lake City this weekend, key Mormons spoke out against a ‘softening’ of their position on gay marriage.
Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve said Saturday: “While many governments and well-meaning individuals have redefined marriage, the Lord has not.
“He designated the purpose of marriage to go far beyond the personal satisfaction and fulfilment of adults, to more importantly, advancing the ideal setting for children to be born, reared and nurtured.”
The church has in the past been accused of wavering in its opposition to gay rights, and faced criticism from conservatives after supporting the decision of the Boy Scouts of America to accept some gay members.
The conference, which Associated Press report was attended by over 100,000 people, also faced protests from groups opposed to the church’s refusal to ordain women.
