Ricky Gervais hits back at anti-equal marriage Twitter trolls: ‘You can’t take equality too far’
Ricky Gervais has hit back at anti-equal marriage trolls on Twitter, showing his support for the historic enactment of England and Wales same-sex marriage laws on Saturday.
As the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act came into force on Saturday allowing gay couples to marry, Gervais posted the following message:
Same sex Marriage isn’t just a victory for gay people. It’s a victory for all of us. ANYTHING that promotes equality, promotes progress.

Following this, an small minority of anti-gay Twitter trolls responded with hate tweets, some accusing the law of taking equality “too far.”
Gervais responded to these message in a series of follow-up tweets:
You can’t take equality “too far”

“@SiempreMadrid_: It should only be a man and a woman, not 2 of same gender.” < Thanks for sorting that out.

I love it when people try to find loopholes in the concept of equality. It’s like it makes them angry that people want respect.

Earlier yesterday, he also responded to another Twitter user asking him for his thoughts on “gay marriage,” to which he replied:
“@BigDeznumber7: thoughts on gay marriage mr gervais?” <Same as my thoughts on “gay driving” or “gay watching TV”…there’s no difference.

Not the only celebrity to show support for England and Wales marriage equality, Spandau Ballet rocker Martin Kemp recently wrote: “Just want to say good luck to all same sex couples tying the knot! Have a fantastic day!” and former N Sync singer Lance Bass also added: “Congrats #England and #Wales !! #Equality.”
