The head of an adamantly anti-gay organisation in the US has weighed in on the debate surrounding Christian charity giant World Vision, to say it must sack its leadership team after flip-flopping on gay acceptance.

On Monday, the group, which is one of the largest Christian charities in the world, said it would allow gay people in same-sex marriages to be employed in the organisation for the first time.

However, after an extreme reaction to the decision from conservative groups, many of whom announced they had dropped their sponsorships of children with the charity, the board yesterday confirmed it has reversed its decision.

Today, the president of the American Family Association Tim Wildmon, weighed in to say the chairman of the board, the board, and the president of World Vision, should all be sacked.

Speaking to OneNewsNow, Wildmon said: “I would say they don’t have any choice but to relieve the chairman of the board of his duties and their president – all those who made this decision to equate homosexual ‘marriage’ with a man and a woman being married. They need to go and start over with a new board.”

In the same article, Matt Barber, president of the Liberty Counsel, said: “It’s good to see the Body of Christ at work and World Vision respond to discipline, because that’s what happened here. They stepped out of line with the Holy Scriptures. In fact, they ran directly afoul of the biblical admonition against partnering with sin and defending sin and facilitating sin.”

Others weighed in to say that World Vision should be punished for stepping out of line.

In the time in-between Monday’s announcement and yesterday’s reversal, several LGBT groups had rallied to donate to the charity in support of its new stance.

Blogger Rachel Held Evans wrote: “This whole situation has left me feeling frustrated, heartbroken, and lost. I don’t think I’ve ever been more angry at the Church, particularly the evangelical culture in which I was raised and with which I for so long identified.”
