Ethiopia to make homosexuality a non-pardonable offence

  • Beelzeebub

    Oh well.

One less place to send any aid to next time they have some environmental disaster.

And to think I contributed to Live Aid. Never again.

    • TomSatsuma

Yup! You show those starving babies… cos it’s their fault

      • Beelzeebub

I will spend my money where I see fit thank you.

      • James!

I know there people are just bigoted ass wholes the same as those they deride

        • ethiopian

carry your filth and dirt to yourself…..homosexuality is sin. It is better die than being a homosexual

          • DZ

Why do you think homosexuality is a sin?

          • Yesh U R

Why do you care what a troll thinks?

          • DZ

            Curiousity.

          • Yesh U R

            Ethiopian=Keithii=insanity= Goodbye troll.

          • Misha

Ok, guess we won’t send our money to Ethiopia any more. Take time to look at dying people in Ethiopia and realise that it’s your hatred causing that, because it’s your hatred keeping our money away ;) Enjoy your hatred and ignorance along with death

          • Martin R

So, Ethiopian, please die and show you are better than us. BTW, why are you reading a gay paper like Pink News?

    • █ █ █ €ώąɲ█ █ █

I support non religious NGOs that don’t allow the money to get anywhere near the governments.

Bodies like unicef or médecins sans frontières for instance

    • ethiopian

It is better to die in starvation rather than being a homosexual. Live Aid is something of the past, we are by far better now…keep your dirt to yourselves

      • Mr THOMAS

You demonstrate so clearly the stupidity of religion. Have you considered educating yourself instead of making a fool of yourself. God really is for the gullible.

      • DZ

It is NEVER better to die of starvation.

      • ian123

Grow up and start thinking for yourself.

      • Misha

Tell that to the starving children will you idiot?

    • rapture

What was the point of live aid? if the population of Ethiopia has doubled since then and there is impending famine facing the country. Surely the best help for these type of countries and the starving is to promote birth control and not keep feeding the problem. Otherwise, I don’t care if they starve, even one less rampant homophobe is something to celebrate.

  • Pablo

Can we please offer every single LGBT Ethiopian and their allies asylum in Europe or something? And then let the rest of them live in their poverty.

    • █ █ █ €ώąɲ█ █ █

From what I understand LGBT discrimination is grounds for asylum in the UK and in Ireland.

    • Jesus_Mohammed

Offering asylum is no solution. As we speak young homosexual boys and girls are being born in Ethiopia and every other nation that hates them. Britain can’t offer refuge in perpetuity for every homosexual generation in an oppressive country.

  • Truth

Yet another black African country demonstrating breathtaking hypocrisy ….. the previously-oppressed now oppressing others. You would have thought this backward and often on the verge of starvation place would have more important issues to solve than who loves who. With imbecilic religious bigots running things, no wonder Mandela worried about the future of The Dark Continent.

    • Rehan

Oppressed by whom? Ethiopia is the one African country that was never colonised (not that that appears to have contributed to an advanced awareness of human rights).

      • CHBrighton

Well, it was invaded by Italy who attempted to make it a permanent colony between 1935 and 1940. But I can’t imagine that colonisation by Italy, with its Vatican domination, would have led to an enlightened policy on human sexuality.

        • Rehan

Quite. But in any event, I believe it was classified as an ‘occupation’ and not as a ‘colonisation.’

      • Connor Larkin

HaileSelassie ruled the country as dictator. Did you forget about Italy occupying Ethiopia from 1935-1940?

        • Rehan

See ‘occupation’ and ‘colonisation’ above. Germany occupied Norway and Belgium (among others) 1940-45 too, do you consider those colonised countries as a result?

      • Truth

Black Africans have been oppressed throughout history by white men simply for being born with black skin. So, you’d think black Africa – particularly the supposedly intelligent leaderships – would consider the gross hypocrisy of oppressing others simply for being whom they are ….

        • Rehan

“Throughout history”? In 12th Dynasty Egypt (ruled by Nubians), by far the most powerful Mediterranean state at the time, for example? Or during the (notably colour-blind) Umayyad Caliphate, perhaps? Or by “history” do you mean only the last 500 years?

But, the span of history apart, how many examples of once-oppressed people sympathising with minority-sexuality rights can you come up with – Poles? Hungarians? Palestinians? On the contrary, you will find that the concept of equal rights has always been promoted by the large educated middle classes of very prosperous nations. Oppressed people usually just want to find other people to oppress in turn.

      • Martin R

Rehan: I think you will find the country was colonised by Italy.

        • Rehan

As I said above, it was ‘occupied’, not ‘colonised’, and in any event the Italian occupation only lasted some 5 years: it’s hardly comparable with the actual colonisation of other nations by Britain, Belgium, France and Germany.

          • Martin R

Perhaps you are too hung up on semantics and entirely missing the point.

          • Rehan

Very possibly. Or perhaps you have, and maybe you think France was ‘colonised’ by Germany 1940-45 too (as also mentioned above). Either way, it was a tangential point to begin with.

    • James!

And Russia and Poland are so progressive. Filthy racist pig

      • Cal

This article is about Ethiopia. Articles about Russia and Poland have similar comments directed at their regimes. Is one not allowed to criticise the spread of Africa’s barbaric anti-Gay laws without being called a racist? Truth is right. Many people there starve. Surely dealing with corruption, poverty, disease, rape and AIDS is more important than scapegoating Gay people. These countries are backward, ignorant and un-evolved.
For comments about Eastern Europe please refer to appropriate threads.

    • ethiopian

You can carry your own dirt to yourself if you like. being poor materially doesn’t mean being poor morally. So keep your own dirts to yourselves and leave us alone. Homosexuality has never been an issue in our country but It was the west and those who have lived in the west that are trying to promote it. we are religious with deep conservative roots. we believe in God who has punished Soddom, Gomorrah and the homosexuals in the past….So keep your own dirt to yourself

      • DZ

What about those people who doesn’t believe in your God?

      • bl

Your so called god will punish you when you die. So badly. Prepare yourself, you will die a horrible death and o to hell….

      • Mr Thomas

Stupid moron. How sad to believe in a homophobic ‘god’. How sad to believe in any ‘god’. Some people need to grow up and deal with reality. 4200 religions and you have chosen yours. You are a prat.

      • ian123

Do ever ask your God why you live in one of the most backward and impoverished countries in the world? Not sure about punishing Sodom and Gomorrah but someone seems to be punishing hell holes like Ethiopia. Do you ever look around and question anything or just unthinkingly and proudly soak up what you have been told?

      • gingerlycolors

Yes, we’ll keep our dirt to ourselves. We will also keep our money to ourselves next time Bob Geldof or anybody else does a fund raising stunt like Band Aid or Live Aid. I remember 1985 well when we all dug our hands into our pockets to raise money for your country. Ingrate!

      • Yesh U R

        Ethiopian = Keith=insanity. Goodbye troll.

      • Misha

Maybe you should ask god why so many people in Ethiopia keep dying from starving and illness no?
Funny, countries where homosexuality is widely accepted are the best for everybody to live, with good jobs, good healthcare, etc…
Since you hate us so much I’ll ask you to do me a favour.. Stay in Ethipia and die there, because one of the reasons our economy grows so much is because gay people are not oppressed, which means they can create products, jobs and bring inovation. Don’t come to the advanced world please, stay with the ignorant people like you. You’re not wleocme in civilisation!

      • Misha

By the way I guess we will keep our gay money from now on and not send it to your country and let you all die in poverty right? Gay taxpayers don’t need to help you disgusting people

    • gingerlycolors

Yes, Africa does have a problem with homophobia and yes, those countries should be dealing with more important problems than who loves who but you do risk tarring everyone who lives there with the same brush.
However I have been called racist myself for using the term ‘Dark Continent’ which is nothing to do with the skin colour of the people who live there but was a term used by explorers as much of the continent was still uncharted by the beginning of the 20th century. In my opinion ‘Dark Continent’ is no more racist than calling the West Midlands ‘The Black Country’, so called because of the heavy industry that thrived there during the Industrial Revolution but nowadays is home to a large immigrant population.

    • Meao

You picked a wrong name. You are simply uneducated and arrongant homo.

  • Rehan

This is so depressing – and for once we can’t even blame Islamists or evangelical Christians – at least I shouldn’t think so, since Ethiopia’s Christianity is quite independent of that sort of nonsense. (Please correct me someone if I’m wrong there.)

These African nations seem to be determined to outdo each other in their race to prove which can run backwards fastest. As has been pointed out above, you’d think they’d have more important things to worry about than picking on gay people – but of course it’s just such teetering cultures that require scapegoats.

    • That guy

You can have all the filthy, immoral perverts…..come and get them….lmao

      • DZ

If by ‘filthy, immoral perverts’ you mean homophobic people like you, then no thanks.

      • spatterman

Ha ha ha…That Guy…you’re dead sexy. I fancy you loads and loads.

      • Misha

Guess we’ll never send money to this country again

  • Steven Gregory

Noble religion-based government rears its judgmental head.
I read the story about Clare Byarugaba, a human rights officer in Uganda and a lesbian. Her own mother threatened to turn her in. The penalties frequently exercised against female homosexuals include the usual beatings and imprisonment, and then we have the most civil of all remedies: CORRECTIVE RAPE. My how the righteous fail. Any American religious zealot who guides or instructs Uganda in this pogrom against homosexuals should be branded as a rapist by association.

  • wadeisin1971

Africa is establishing itself as separate from the rest of the world morality and a human rights abuser. They will suffer the sting of isolation.

    • That guy

Hhahaahahahaha…….like the rest of the world approves homosexuality. Africa will be a better place without your degeneracy and sickness.

      • DZ

        ….You must have misunderstood something.

  • Tom Cotner

I wonder how they would feel if some European or American country legislated having black skin as an unpardonable offense? I honestly don’t see the difference.
I can no easier rid myself of my sexual orientation than they can rid themselves of their black skin — as if either would even wish to do so.
Hate is a terrible thing to waste on something that cannot be changed.

    • That guy

Hahaha….how stupid are you, that is the biggest false equivalency there is. Homosexuality is a sick lifestyle choice, you are NOT born with it. You can choose not to be gay !!

      • DZ

Then why have I never heard about straight people choosing to be gay for a year or so in order to prove that being gay is a lifestyle choice.

        Besides, homosexuality is not sick.

        • That guy

They can engage in homosexual behavior if they wanted too, Everyone can but don’t….It is not like you need a special organ or something….

          • DZ

Then, again, why haven’t anyone done it in order to prove it once and for all? Can you answer that?

          • That guy

Because it is disgusting and imoral,,,,,

          • DZ

So you’re saying that no one have been willing to sacrifice themselves to actually prove an argument that could have given impact to the whole “born this way”-discussion? Seems weird to me.
Homosexuality have been observed in nearly 1,500 species, so it’s not as unnatural as you think.

          • Yesh U R

That guy = Keith= insane = troll. Shall we ignore do you think?

          • Misha

Maybe others can also judge you then, and stop you from doing whatever it is you do with your life because we feel that way about you, that you are immoral and disgusting.

          • Martin R

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. Please eat the latter, you disgusting and amoral (note the spelling) pig.

      • Rehan

You can choose not to be gay !!

Just because you think you’ve managed to do that, pet, doesn’t make it so.

      • Cal

Anyone who thinks sexuality is a choice is by definition bisexual.

      • Misha

Sexuality is a part of ur birth, most scientific evidence proved it… and yes, there is proof you can’t change it! So your comment is wrong and stupid.

  • cel

How about bringing a law where people would not be allowed to starve to death? or better than that a law where anyone has to drink clean water? How about bringing back slavery (oh no, don’t say that, that is offensive.) Black people from Africa used to be opressed now they opress others. VILE, VILE PEOPLE
These politicians just deserve a big green spit on their faces.

    • That guy

It is better to starve to death than to be a ‘fagg0t…. And no one is starving in Ethiopian you stupid ignorant racist, Ethiopia is the fast growing country in the world. And learn something about Ethiopian and it history before spewing your ignorance.

      • DZ

In every country there will be at least a few people starving, no matter how rich that country is.

      • Yesh U R

Ethiopia is one of Africa’s poorest states, although it has experienced rapid economic growth since the end of the civil war. Almost two-thirds of its people are illiterate. The economy revolves around agriculture, which in turn relies on rainfall. It is one of Africa’s leading coffee producers.

Many Ethiopians depend on food aid from abroad. In 2004 the government began a drive to move more than two million people away from the arid highlands of the east in an attempt to provide a lasting solution to food shortages.

Economy: One of fastest growing non-oil economies in Africa.
Depends heavily on agriculture, which is often affected by drought. Coffee is a key export.

So you’d be in among the two-thirds of the illiterates depending on food aid from abroad, but at least you will have coffee, but not much water to make it into a drink.

The majority of illiterates in the Country are shamelessly exploited by their own Government and Ethiopia’s Orthodox Church, and the elite in both organisations, of course, are never short of food to eat or clean water to drink. Ethiopia, corrupt and ignorant, it is a long African tradition.

      • Rehan

the fast growing country in the world

Ignorant as well as stupid. Well done.

  • CHBrighton

I think it’s past the stage where the UN needs to step in. Too many people are dominated by governments who are not protecting them and are even putting them at great risk. After 1945, it was agreed Never Again. But it is happening all over again.

  • George Broadhead

Yet another predominately Christian country joins others in Africa in a hateful crusade against LGBT people.

  • wallflwr76

Let the Ethiopian vermin starve next time their government uses a famine to wipe them out.

  • spatterman

I’ve noticed that some on here immediately post racist comments whenever the story is about homophobia in Africa…and yet when we hear about homophobia in Russia, race is NEVER mentioned.

    Why is that?

  • BJH

The next time there is a famine, don’t donate. Why donate to bigots and homophobes.

  • Inis_Magrath

Africa — home to Ebola outbreaks, lack of clean water and at least 4 ongoing armed conflicts. But not to worry, they are making being gay illegal which obviously is their most important issue.

  • Mike

Why don’t they just get on with their tribal massacres, rape all the women to cure AIDS, continue to kill their wild animals and eat chimps(yes, bushmeat!) and leave the Gays alone………

  • Joe

Horn of Africa countries laws are very hostile to lgbt. Africa needs to stop anti lgbt laws and Somalia punishes gays by death. I met many gay Ethiopians living in U.S.
