Olympic diver Tom Daley says he’s delighted after winning the title of biggest inspiration for young people in sport.

Daley, 19, who picked up a diving bronze at the London 2012 Olympics, received the accolade in a poll organised by the National Citizen Service (NCS).

The poll aims to celebrate the achievements of young people.

In a message Daley said: “It’s amazing to be part of all the amazing effort you are putting in, so keep up the good work.”

NCS aims to increase the confidence, teamwork and leadership skills of young people by encouraging them to take part in social action and volunteer schemes in their communities.

Rapper Tinie Tempah, and model Lily Cole were also named as figures of inspiration in the poll.

Gay Brazilian diver Ian Matos in January said he had been inspired to come out after seeing Daley’s December YouTube video.

In the video, Daley revealed of being in a same-sex relationship. He later confirmed the identity of the man as Hollywood star Dustin Lance Black.
