Rugby star apologises for ‘faggot’ joke

  • Colin

We have all said something we shouldn’t at times and regretted it. I hope this is enough to make him examine why he feels the need to put anyone down never mind members of a minority group

  • Rehan

To whom has he apologised? There’s no mention of him withdrawing his comment on Twitter.

    As expected… 2hours in and @rhyscrane bites the dust! #faggot  http://twitpic.com/5cblxw – quick search still shows this…

@MichaelThomas63 @ZizziCardiff @bazil15 They do a lovely meat pizza! If only you weren’t a faggot and ate meat!

  • Wingby

He looks quite a bit like a lot of gay men I know…..

    • Brett Gibson

Yeah he does come across as quite gay.

  • Brett Gibson

There’s also a pic of twitter of him reading to primary school kids. Wonder if he encourages them to use words like that.

If he’d written a n^gger joke, I’m sure it would be more than a talking to by his club. He needs to be sacked from his job. A racist would be – look what happened to Ron Atkinson. So why not a homophobe?

One rule for racism, another for homophobia.

    • James!

It’s not black v white racism v anti gay. If he said that woman looks like a slag he would have been sacked like andy gray and that other idiot. I do raise an eyebrow when people seem to imply black people are undeserving of protection from racism because anti gay behaviour does not have the same treatment

      • Mark Y

No one is implying black people are undeserving of protection. I’m stating the fact that people are punished for racism, whereas they are not for homophobia.

Here is a NEWSFLASH, the offender doesn’t get to CLOSE THE MATTER! The matter gets closed when the targets of the offense say so!

With Athletic sports bodies and organizations all expressing their dedication to combating “homophobia in sport” It’s time so send out a strong message it won’t be tolerated and mean it!

How many people this last week alone have made comments and then “apologized”
That is not a precedent for fighting homophobia, it just means that damage control and self preservation or PR for the preservation of their teams integrity was deployed.

I am tired of a person being given a “second” chance because a team has too much invested in them, or they are a valued player or crowd puller.

Fines don’t appear to work or even hurt some players. It’s time that the period of Indefinite suspensions came to and end (especially as most seem to be rescinded on appeal)

If players want to participate in a sport and have fame or fortune, they need to respect the privilege of their success the in that sport with honorable conduct and integrity. It’s time 5 year or lifetime bans were the benchmark to fighting this kind of conduct. Yes there will be an outcry to punishments like this being imposed, but after a few elf inflicted bans making it the norm you will likely see the nail of combat has been hit squarely on the head and attitudes change.

What a depressing week this has been so far.
I have long praised Rugby as being more mature, equality driven and liberal than scummy football, and now we have Rugby players shoving their feet so deep in their own mouths they can kick a ball from their arse!

I’m starting to wonder if I need to back-track on my views of Rugby, perhaps these players are every bit as immature and ignorant as football players and their governing bodies?

  • AdrianT

More like a halfwit than homophobe. No excuse though. These idiots get lots of sponsorship and get promoted as ‘role models’. Again, the point is, people who are good at kicking and throwing a ball are good for that, and not necessarily good for anything else. It’s time society realised that to start with.
Leaving his brainless comments to one side, I am more concerned that his twitter account reveals an unhealthy interest in horses.

  • Steve_R

A friend of mine says it is aptly named “Twit”er!
Putting a picture on “Twit”pics! just about sums up the irony!

  • Michael2912

His neck seems to be broader than his head – says it all.

I don’t tweet and have no intention of doing so. The more I see of the tweets of others, necessarily second hand, the less worthy it seems.

  • Truth

I wonder what is his REAL issue? In my experience, “the bigger the homophobe – the bigger the closet case”. By using derogatory terms such as these, isn’t he simply attempting to say to the world, “There’s nothing gay about me”? I think you’ll find MANY homophobes use this exact same ploy as a means of displacing their inner- concerns.

  • John

Didn’t realise that gay people have a certain ‘look’ according to comments below. I’m pretty sure this just a classic case of banter gone wrong.

    • Rehan

Well, it’s about time this fool realised “faggot” is unacceptable as “banter” then, isn’t it?

    • Wingby

Not getting the irony, John, I think

  • Proud Da

A running joke in our family is that our oldest son, who is proudly gay, looks and acts just like Tom Isaac, without the accent. He is even mistaken for Isaac at restaurants, sports bars, the Mall, and even gay clubs. I wonder what that says about how Tom Isaac looks???

    question………why take offence….??????????

  • Aaron

The article is entitled “Rugby star apologies for ‘faggot’ joke”. I’m not sure ‘star’ is the word I’d use personally. Also, where is the apology? I’ve read the article from top to bottom and can’t see it. It just says that his club pulled him up on it (although we don’t know how strict they were from the article, could just be them covering their backs and he may not have even apolgised to them) and just said said it to them. No public statement from him apologising and stating that he abhors homophobia etc. It’s just like those non-apologies we usually get.

    • Aaron

He’s now posted an apology on his Twitter page. However, it’s an apology to the specific individuals he called faggots. There’s no general apology for fans and others he has offended. The responses to his apology on his Twitter page are largely chastising him for it and are full of “PC gone mad” type comments. There are a couple of people who have pulled him up though and said he should have apologised to all and not just those specific named people.
