I once used disgusting anti-gay language, admits former Professional Football Association chair

  • Truth

It takes guts to admit you were once a bigot. Brainwashing by religion and consequently, culture, is very difficult to undo. This man has to be admired for questioning what is so often swallowed simply because it’s sold by ‘faith’.

    • Phil H

He’s not saying he was a bigot. He’s saying he was poorly educated on the subject of sexuality and engaged in words and behaviour that he now realises could have been damaging to others. Most people who sling around slurs aren’t really bigots but are shaped by a culture where language like that is deemed “banter”. Carlisle is showing himself as a real man and a leader who’s willing to own up to his past indiscretions and clearly say to the current generation of footballers that its not good enough. If we’re going to see the holy grail of an openly gay top flight footballer in this country then we’re going to need allies like Clark Carlisle to help them.

  • Brett Gibson

Good for him. I’m sure there’ll still be some haters for him but it does takes balls to stand up and say “I was wrong”. At the end of the day it was never his fault, rather the fault of the society he grew up in. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

  • James!

    He’s kinda fit

  • JackAlison

UM yeah I can remember lotsa banter in the dressin room about blacks. And I took it flippantly. OH PLU..EASE. Like Saul struck on the road to Damascus. Hes like every “I didnt know it would cause offence…..I apologise unreservedly ” celebrity. Hes black! He has NO excuse to assume it wouldnt hurt another minority group. I wanna know how many ppl. hes roughed up for being gay. Im sure hes fully aware of the traumatic and de humanizing pain of black racism to know what its like. If in 2014 hes just woken up to his abbhorent behaviour Im speechless. He really is a meathead.

    • Rehan

Hes black! He has NO excuse to assume it wouldnt hurt another minority group

I hope you feel as strongly about the racism, anti-Semitism, ageism and every other -ism it’s so easy to find among gay people too.

      • Robert W. Pierce

Yes, and as for those gays who are UKIPers, a party whose official policy opposes equal marriage, well…….

      • JackAlison

        keep ur wig on luv
itll blow off with ur pollyanna do gooda view of the world
the article is about our football friend
        stay on topic?!

        • Rehan

Stay on topic? Oh good, you admit your observation was irrelevant to the discussion then.

          • JackAlison

            FACT

hes black and there is no doubt he would have suffered heinous racism

            FACT

he admits he made light of gay bashing remarks in the dressing room

IF he cant see the connection with his own plight over the years and hes suddenly woken up in 2014 like rip van winkle then he must be like you having lived under a rock 4 a hundred years

          • Rehan

Interesting that you do understand how to type capital letters after all, but I refer you back to my original comment, which you appear to have difficulty comprehending. Or maybe you believe double standards are only deplorable in other people.

          • JackAlison

    • That There Other David

Clarke Carlisle is most certainly not a meathead. He’s intelligent and extremely articulate from the interviews I’ve seen. You also have not read the article properly. It clearly states he realised his previous failings in use of language years ago.

      • JackAlison

        oh I read mr erudite
I just probe a lil deeper
        its called analysis

It’s not particularly good analysis though is it? I suggest you keep probing.

          • That There Other David

            Oh dear. Never mind.

  • AdrianT

Clarke’s sincerity is admirable. Your ability to change your mind according to observations and evidence, acknowledging the past and saying sorry for harm done are what matters. (I bet there are things we have all said and done that were hurtful or thoughtless, when we didn’t know as much as we do now.)

A refreshing change from some tabloids who have suddenly championed out sports stars, just 20 years after trying to hound them, or politicians who have a sudden ‘Damascus’ conversion and pretend they’ve ‘always been for gay rights’. Statements like this make the difference between a principled leader and an opportunist.

  • Rehan

I too admire Carlisle’s honesty in this. I’m sure we have all, in our time, used prejudiced words unthinkingly, and it’s great that someone with his public profile is willing to admit to it and that he now recognises how wrong it was.
