Sorry to say this but equal marriage reforms should be imposed by the UK government, end of. They have imposed legislation before and it can be done again and needs to be. If NI wants to remain within the UK, accept huge amounts of cash from the rest of the UK tax payers then they must fall into line with the rest of us on this issue. If I lived in NI I would certainly vote Sinn Fein and I’m not even a Catholic but raised protestant. Shame on the Unionist fascists.

    1. I’m not 100% sure… if the UK government had imposed equal marriage on Scotland, then Scotland would have the English version of equal marriage, which isn’t actually as robust a piece of legislation.

The Scottish version is far better for trans people, for example.

But yes, I agree that in the absence of their own efforts, it should be forced!

Yes, but I suspect the UK version will eventually be amended. Already, humanist weddings and CPs for heteros are up for review later this year into 2015 and I’ve no doubt the spousal veto may well be eliminated as pressure mounts to do just that. The important thing right now is that gay people can marry come March 29th.

  2. Universal suffrage, de-criminalization of homosexuality, gay military service, trans legal gender change, same-sex marriage.
History will judge a nation by if and when it secures key rights for all its citizens.

So no pressure, but you need to HURRY UP and rout those religious homophobes, because 10 years on a human time-scale is a long to wait.

  3. 10 years is too long. If the Unionists are so obsessed with being part of Britain they should keep up with British developments in legislation. It’s unacceptable that they should be allowed to go on blocking equal rights for another decade.

  4. The UK Parliament should exercise its sovereignty, that power the Unionists are so keen on preserving, and impose equality on this backward province.

  5. 10 years? You’re having a giraffe aint ya?

How about an “Order-in-council” to force Northern Ireland (NI) to move with the times on marriage equality like the rest of the UK – since Scotland, Wales and England have marriage equality now. Also it is time both Jersey and Isle of Man to have marriage equality as well, since they also have civil partnerships.

Ireland will have a referendum on marriage equality in 2015 and I hope it passes (70 percent of people support gay marriage according to opinion polls in Ireland). I am predicting that 57 percent of people will APPROVE marriage equality in Ireland at the referendum. I wonder what the text or wording of the referendum will be??????
