A Facebook campaign to get ‘It’s Raining Men’ to number one following the homophobic comments of a UKIP councillor may has successfully led the 1983 hit to re-enter the UK’s Top 40.

The Official Charts Company has announced that the song has reached 31 in the charts, following the success of the social media campaign.

The song, which is available to download from iTunes here, and from Amazon, here.

UKIP Councillor David Silvester recently claimed that the floods to have hit the UK in December and January were caused by same-sex marriage, and that homosexuality can be cured by Christian prayer.

Mr Silvester also claimed in an interview defending his views that more children have been “murdered” as a result of abortion laws than the number of Jews killed in by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

In his letter he said: “I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same sex marriage Bill.”

He added: “Now, even as Cameron sheds crocodile tears on behalf of destitute flooded homeowners, playing at advocate against the very local councils he has made cash-strapped, it is his fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods.”

“Since the passage of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, the nation has been beset by serious storms and floods.”

Darren Pop who organised the campaign said: “I’m incredibly proud of the song getting to 31 in the charts. It makes me feel very humbled to be part of a community that will pull together to fight back against bigotry. It’s very comforting to know that British people will always speak up and challenge comments like David Silvester made.”
