So instead of “don’t teach kids any gay sex stuff” they’re going to have “don’t teach kids any bad sex stuff”.

Hmm. Remind me, who gets to decide what is “bad”?

Even if such a law gets applied to all sexualities, it sounds like a great way of churning out candidates for priesthood and killing off the rest with STDs.

I think the intention is to cover any sex stuff at all, and not to distinguish between good and bad. You’re right though, keeping kids in the dark will lead to rise in underage pregnancies, STDs, suicides and all the other things that keep charities like Brook in business in the UK.

      1. Midnighter 26 Jan, 2:30pm

They might meet resistance if they were to overtly ban all sex education as an example, but my point was that whatever they want to do, with this proposed legislation is so open ended they can define the boundaries to suit. They could ban all discussion of sex with children or just that relating to homosexuality and carry on as they are.

The devil is in the (lack of) detail.

Unfortunately in a society where LGBT issues are being systematically swept under the carpet and those who wish to tell the truth about themselves silenced, a policy of not discussing any sexual issues at all is still a de facto ban. The children will only see heteronormative examples wherever they look, be it in the media or out on the street. Those who know they are different will be very much made to feel alone.

Sadly, it is only when Russia experiences a rise in teenage suicides that it will notice. However, as in the West the ignorant will once again attribute this to the youngsters being LGBT rather than how their nation treats them for being LGBT.

  2. Shhh. Is that the unmistakable sound of back-peddaling …?

    1. No. It’s just the sound of trying to hide their real intentions.

      1. I’m an optimist – maybe a foolish one – but an optimist none-the -less. However, until Russia grows-up and dumps its weird affiliation with the church – banned for so long during the Communist era – that ain’t going to happen. Putin claims to despise Western ideals …yet is desperate to encourage capitalism and ‘Christian’ values. Sounds JUST like the States to me!

There is momentary gratification in the idea of straights conforming to this ridiculous law, but this change would do nothing to help gay people and will only harm Russian youth.

If this amendment passes, heterosexual marriage will be the only adult relationship kids can learn about. But nobody will stop straight people kissing on the street. No straight people will be sacked for having pre-marital sex.

This law will be used to stop young people getting any safer sex advice, and to clamp down on any discussion of family, romantic or sexual life which doesn’t conform to a patriarchal and homophobic view of the world. It is dangerous and we should oppose it.

But politically, it is a very clever idea. The Russian government will portray this as an attempt to protect children from porn and exploitation. Superficially, gay and straight people will be treated the same. In reality, kids will be still be told that heterosexual marriage is the only proper relationship.

Oh I get it, Russia’s image badly tarnished, international pressure building, foreign investment in the balance! So transparent! What a bunch of douche-bags.

  5. “This bill proposes to deem any information which promotes priority of sexual relations as opposed to family life values, spiritual and intellectual development of minors as information harmful to the health and (or) development of children.”

    No progress whatsoever then.

    Not yet, at any rate.

It’s going to take a long time.

    We need to persevere.

    Keep piling on the pressure.

“This bill proposes to deem any information which promotes priority of sexual relations as opposed to family life values, spiritual and intellectual development of minors as information harmful to the health and (or) development of children.”

Translation – anything the Orthodox cult doesn’t agree with will land you in prison.

they said please leave our kids alone ,,when will they learn its not your kids we want, we want to be aloud to live with out fear ,, and its only heterosexuals that treat kids bad

    1. twitless 27 Jan, 8:25am

Maybe gay people have more interest in how kids grow up because we have a better insight into how kids can be affected when brought up in a negative way?

We all know what it is like being given only negative information about yourself and being too afraid to share your feelings with an adult. We all mature at different ages too so some kids are younger than others when they need positive info and positive role models.

This may be why we care so much about kids and what they are going through.

Straight people never experienced this so don’t have the first clue what it means. Even to their own kids who may be growing up gay.

Thousands of Russian gay kids are already having their minds bent by this new law, just knowing about it and hearing what the politicians are saying.

Trying to make a fake chess match by naming the pieces by other words- still is a fake match. Fascists , flattery gets you nowhere.

  9. This actually sounds like a turn for the worse…

“This bill proposes to deem any information which promotes priority of sexual relations as opposed to family life values, spiritual and intellectual development of minors as information harmful to the health and (or) development of children.”
Basically it still targets same-sex couples, but now the bill would also include heterosexual people living together “out of wedlock”. Basically, any relationships they find “oppsed to family life values”. And the spiritual part? That might target couples of different religions.
I don´t like the way things are heading in Russia…

    1. What’s the difference between the Russian Orthodoxy and Islamic Taliban?
Absolutely nothing … and the Russian population will live to regret allowing Putin’s dictatorship to govern EVERY aspect of their lives.

  10. clivejw 28 Jan, 4:46am

“Although the body of the law remains largely unchanged, one new provision includes banning “propaganda of sexual relations among minors, expressed in obtrusion of information on priority of sexual relations to minors, if such actions do not contain a criminal offense.”

Got that from Google translate, did you? I have no idea what that is supposed to mean (well, I do, but only because I am a professional translator and can guess what the original may have said). Pathetic, use a real Russian translator (like me).
