What a poorly written piece. A Christmas Day episode? You do realize it’s now the 21st January, right?

It’s a nice little filler piece, but please provide a little more information and explain obviously confusing things in your stories. This makes very little sense as it is.

What is the reason for the Backstreet Boys being there?
Why is it a Christmas Day Episode in January?
What is the history of the couple on the show?
What is the status of same sex marriage laws in the country?
    What are the social attitudes?
What is a comparable UK or US example?

    1. They got engaged on a Christmas episode ;)
The Backstreet boys are there because of the wedding party, Lucas love them.
I don’t know how to tell you their history, so I wont tell you that, sorry :p
Gay marriage is allowed in Netherlands.

Maybe it is a bit clear for you know ;)

The Netherlands was actually the first country to legalize same sex marriage.

The backstreet boys are there because they’re awesome.

    2. It says they decided to get married on a christmas day episode.
The backstreet boys are performing at their wedding as a surprise.
Same sex marriage is legal in the country.

    3. The Backstreet Boys are there to perform, they are the entertainment, every wedding has entertainment. They decided to get married on the Christmas day episode. Menno is a police officer, Lucas is the owner of a night club. Same sex marriage in the Netherlands is just as allowed as ”normal” marriage (thank God for that!). Dutch people are very open minded, so the wedding is not very controversial. A comparable show is probably As the world turns, I don’t know any UK examples. I hope I’ve answered all your questions :)

    4. Yes, they got engaged on christmas day and the backstreet boys are performing on the wedding as a surprise. Menno is a chief at the police office and Lucas runs a trendy dance club. That’s where they met. In The Netherlands begin gay and gay marriage are pretty much socially accepted. Dutch people are very open and we accept a lot of things, unlike other country’s, like the use of soft drugs and gay marriage. We don’t have much illegal activities or murder or other crimes here. I’m not sure if this could be compared to other country’s, because we might just be the first country to have a gay marriage in a soap series. In the series they have no enemies either, everyone loves and accepts both of them.

    5. Well, Wendy told you already somethings. Why does the history matters? That is not the point of this article. The point is that this is the first same-sex marriage on television. I could be the first in the whole world, so there is no example. But the serie is comparable with Days of our Lives. I don’t know why they’re talking about the Backstreet Boys, it’s not that important to the storyline, but maybe they wanna attract watchers? Anymore questions? :P

      @Bloke Toys,

The christmas episode was at Christmas. That was the day that they decided to get married.
The Backstreet boy will be there for entertainment at the wedding ( and for more viewers ofcourse)
The history of the couple in the show is quite long, a few years.
In Holland it’s ok to get married when you’re lesbian, gay or straight.
      You understand now ?

13 down votes for pointing out that it’s a shallow piece offering little background or information on the story?
Do people commenting here known what the word NEWS means?

Thanks for all the responses, but these should have been in the original piece. This is what a news story should be, offering background on a story, and digging deeper than merely repeating the contents of a TV guide.

I am aware of the status of same-sex marriage in the Netherlands, and of social attitudes, the point is that not everyone will be and this is supposed to be an INFORMATIVE NEWS STORY.

This is not a celeb gossip blog, this is Pink NEWS. More information about stories should be offered in the articles.

I sense to much stupid in you.

  2. His name isn’t Luke but it’s Lucas!

  3. This is great television!

  4. ”What is the status of same sex marriage laws in the country?”
    My god!
The netherlands was the first country of the world that introduce gay-marriage (2002)
and the only one today who by law makes no difference between a gay marriage and heterosexual marriage

  5. I love Lucas! He plays his role perfectly! Can’t wait to see their marriage :) it was about time!

  6. omg English is sooooo bad!!

  7. Christa 22 Jan, 4:34pm

However it is just a daily soap as a lot of other countries have, it is a good idea to open up some minds to this issue. And… everybody is free to zap to another canal if he or she is less open minded.

  9. It would be really good if some kind Dutch person recorded the relevant scenes, including the proposal scene, and then subtitled them and then uploaded them to YouTube so we could all enjoy.

If anyone does do this, please let us know. Let PinkNews know. Thanks.

    1. You can download the app RTLXL and than you can look every scene

    2. You can watch this serie with English subtitles on Facebook, on this page –> https://www.facebook.com/gtst

    3. Andypet 23 Jan, 10:49pm

Go to GTST Facebook page where Lucas’ story is subtitled by the very dedicated Mark. The show has quite an international following because of him.

  10. This isn’t the first gay marriage on tv. There has actually been a real gay marriage on the tv show called Love Letters about 11 years ago.

  11. Taken them long enough hasn’t it. Been legal since 2002 over there!

    1. 2001**

  12. Loved the Gay Weddings on Coronation Street and Eastenders. Let’s hope these 2 last longer than they did on the British Soaps lol!

  13. AdrianT 23 Jan, 12:30pm

Out of interest, is the ‘enkele feitconstructie’ (enabling discrimination against ‘practising’ LGBT people, most notably in religious schools still enshrined in Dutch law? What is happening there?

The most important story in the Netherlands is the Sochi delegation – King, Queen, PM and 2 ministers all going. Good to see this has caused outrage.

  14. salsamouse 26 Jan, 2:00pm

This isn’t the first gay marriage on tv- has anyone seen The New Normal?
