‘heroic’ reporting? for such banality? eh? i suppose it must be if the independent says so! are they licking each other or what!? imho britain would advance so much quicker if it wasn’t for The Scum and it’s million or so drones that buy it! personally haven’t bought it since hillsborough… maybe that was ‘heroic’ reporting as well.

  2. Whether we like it or not (and I for one don’t), the Sun has by far the highest circulation of any UK newspaper, and for it to label a footballer a ‘hero’ and ‘brave’ for coming out is a very welcome – and rather surprising – development. Let’s hope it has a trickle-down effect in changing opinions at least a little.

    1. Well said, Rehan. I am so surprised at how this coming out story has divided the room. I never thought I would see “brave” and “hero” in The Sun while PN comments are spattered with grudging praise and mean-mindedness.
To me it’s quite simple. A young man who has spent his life in the world’s most homophobic professional environment has come out. What’s not to like?

they’re just jumping on a bandwagon because it suits them.

      1. If they’re jumping on a bandwagon then that suggests there’s been a substantial shift in popular opinion – and, without wanting to be too much of a Pollyanna here, surely that can only be a good thing?

    Heroic?

That’s beyond excessive. People are heroes now for not squealing homophobia?

    1. Yes that’s true, but the word ‘hero’ has in general become rather debased nowadays, when any and every member of the armed forces is labelled a hero by papers like the Sun.

Still, it’s a welcome change when it’s applied to a footballer coming out, wouldn’t you say?

any and every member of the armed forces IS a hero. we don’t need a scum paper to label them.

        1. And what about the members of the armed forces, all of whom you indiscriminately label ‘heroes’, who read the Sun? Are they heroes or scum? Or heroes with scummish tendencies? Or does their heroism miraculously prevent them from being tainted by scum?

Blimey! What’s the Mail going to do now?
