A man in the US state of Utah who said he was going on hunger strike until after his state banned same-sex couples from marrying has responded to questions of why, to say “everyone needs a hobby”.

Trestin Meacham revealed at the weekend that he had been on hunger strike for twelve days, in order to protest against the fact that same-sex couples were temporarily able to marry in the state of Utah.

On Monday the US Supreme Court issued a temporary stay, which blocks officials from issuing marriage licences to same-sex couples pending an appeal from the state against a ruling which allowed same-sex marriage last month.

One of the first things he did was ask for pizza from his followers. Later he tweeted to say that he did not only do it in opposition to equal marriage, but supposedly to “expose the hatred of the homosexual movement.”

The fast had other purposes than what was shared with the public. One was to expose the hated of the supposedly tolerant homosexual movement

He has now said that he did it because “everybody needs a hobby”.

Many have pointed out that Meacham had asked for a ban on same-sex marriage, which has not actually happened, and therefore he should still be on hunger strike.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor only put a temporary stay on the issue until the state of Utah’s appeal has been considered.

Of course, if the Supreme Court rules to uphold the lower court’s ruling, therefore reinstating same-sex marriage in the state, Meacham may go on hunger strike again.

Meacham is the head of sovereign nation Kherutistan, set up in the US, which notes a plot of land on the sea-bed of the Pacific Ocean as its territory. It does not have a specific currency, but which may allow Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups as part of trade.

It also encourages all citizens to be heavily armed.

After Meacham announced that he hunger striking, a group was set up by supporters of equal marriage, to send him pictures of really delicious-looking food.
