My Mother and Father loved me. But they were still homophobic bigots when I came out of the closet.

Ah, the old “I have friends and family who are gay… blah blah blah”

I’ve known people who are extremely racist toward strangers, but when you point out their black coworker they’ll say “oh, well he’s different, I know him!”

I had a friend whose brother is gay, his mother lesbian and his closest friend bisexual, it didn’t stop him from using the word “faggot” to attack people he didn’t like.

Knowing people who belong to a group you express hatred for outside of their earshot is still bigotry. Perhaps it’s even worse, because it indicates that they may be a low-level sociopath, saying the right things to the right people while hiding their psychological mess.

Of the two, I know which of them I am more likely to believe.
