Facebook has admitted that its decision to remove an innocuous image of two men kissing was an “error”.

The administrators of the Have A Gay Day page claimed more than 100 users had been blocked from logging into Facebook and banned from posting photos, after being reprimanded for sharing the kissing image.

It had been posted numerous times in the past without problems.

The caption ironically read: “Did this picture offend you? Did you ever think, maybe your opinion is offensive?”

On Thursday, a Facebook spokesperson told PinkNews that the image had been removed in error and has since been restored.

Facebook also disputed claims that it had blocked users from posting images to the Have A Gay Day page.

In January 2013, Facebook apologised for deeming that a photograph of a mixed-race gay couple was “offensive”.

Murray Lipp, the manager of the Facebook page for Gay Marriage USA, was told that he would be banned from posting content on the Gay Marriage USA page for a week after violating Facebook’s “policies and community standards”.

The social networking platform eventually reversed the decision.
