UK: Man charged in connection with manslaughter of gay grandfather

A man has been charged in connection with the manslaughter of Ronald Hayes, a gay grandfather who was fatally assaulted near a gay bar in Chester earlier this year.

Kevin Gardner, 26, of Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port, is due to appear before magistrates in the city of Chester on 7 January.

Mr Hayes, 63, from Morpeth in Northumberland, suffered serious injuries following an assault near to the Liverpool Arms Bar, in Northgate Street, Chester, at around 12.50am on Saturday 23 November 2013.

He died two days later in hospital.

Cheshire Constabulary had requested the assistance of the public with their inquires.

A second Ellesmere Port man, also aged 26, has been released without charge.
