A video released as part of the United Nation’s ‘Free and Equal’ campaign names the 76 countries where being gay is still illegal, and highlights shifts towards equality since 1948.

The video notes how many countries still ban same-sex relationships, but also notes forty countries which have repealed such laws since 1990, and highlights shifts such as equal marriage, and protections against discrimination.

The United Nations announced last month that hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will be joining its Free & Equal campaign as “equality champions.”

An instrumental version of the duo’s song ‘Same Love’ appears on the new UN video.

The Free & Equal campaign aims to raise awareness of homophobic and transphobic violence and discrimination, and encourage greater respect for the rights of LGBT people everywhere. The campaign was launched by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay in Cape Town, South Africa on 27 July 2013 at an event featuring Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, and South Africa Constitutional Court Justice Edwin Cameron.
