Controversial US pastor Rick Warren has told CNN presenter Piers Morgan that same-sex marriage laws are attempting to “redefine marriage” in a manner similar to the dystopian reversal of meanings in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.

In an interview on Morgan’s chat show aired on Friday, Warren responded to the former Mirror editor’s question on homosexuality by saying: “I’m more against the redefinition of the term marriage than anything else.”

Morgan had asked him: “How can you as a Christian man, and a great man… espouse genuine equality if you don’t allow gay people the same right to get married as straight people?”

According to Warren, the idea of an “other group” like gay people attempting to redefine marriage is “not right.”

He went on to invoke George Orwell’s dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, in which he claims “doublespeak” (in the actual text, doublethink) referred to the concept of “words meaning the exact opposite of what they used to mean.”

“Don’t take a term and make it something different,” he said.

When pressed on whether would eventually concede his point on equal marriage, he added: “I fear the disapproval of God more than I fear your disapproval or the disapproval of society.”

Previously, Warren said on the topic of whether being gay is natural: “Just because I have a feeling doesn’t make it right. Not everything natural is good for me.”

In 2009, Warren was accused of supporting Uganda’s pending Anti-Homosexuality Bill, through his alleged involvement with evangelical churches in the country – claims which he denied.
