As an expatriate Kiwi, I am delighted to see this move by the NZDF. New Zealand is a much better place for LGBT now, than the country I left in 1985, but I can also say that even in those terrible days, I could count on my straight friends and family for support. They never deserted me, even though it was a criminal offence punishable by up to 7 years imprisonment to have a relationship with someone of the same sex.

Now we have same sex marriage, and this wonderful video. Life is sweet.

Tht is awesome. What a huge positive example that shows to the world. Thank you !!!

  3. New Zealand delivers yet another first. Well done, Kiwis! You’re not only making things better for young LGBTs in New Zealand, but you’re providing inspiration to the rest of the world.

C’mon, UK Defence Minister Philip Hammond! Can you do as well?

Hammond? Not in a million years unless ordered to by Cameron! He’s a religious nutter too, not only opposed equal marriage but civil partnerships. He has an extremely poor record on LGBT equality.

NZ also was the first country to give women the vote!

Watching the launch of this at the Pride in Defence Conference was very moving – several of the young military standing around me were in tears as they watched their friends tell their stories.

For the Chief of the Defence Force to actually introduce this just tells me that this is not the world I grew up in – I’m glad for the changes.

As the mother of a Flight Lieutenant who took part in the video, I am immensely proud of him, and proud of NZ Defence Forces for their liberated views. It shows me that at last it is recognised that a person’s sexual orientation has nothing whatsoever to do with their ability to be the very best in our forces. Well done Defence Forces, and well done to those who took part in the video – I have no doubt that it will reach, and help, many people all over the world. Fantastic.
