US: Court hears discrimination case after bakery refused to make wedding cake for gay couple
A judge in the Colorado Civil Rights Commission is today hearing arguments in a case filed against a bakery which refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple.
The couple said Mr Phillips said he would not make a cake for them, after he found out they were celebrating their wedding in Colorado, after they got married in Massachusetts.
He said making a wedding cake for a gay couple would violate his Christian beliefs, read the complaint.
Arguments will be heard in today’s hearing, but it is unclear whether a ruling will be made on the same day
The complaint was filed last year on behalf of the couple by the American Civil Liberties Union.
In the state of Colorado, the owner of the bakery could go to prison for up to a year if the court rules against him, and if he continues to refuse to make wedding cakes for gay couples.
