Cost grounds my arse! The religious lobby is behind this I bet. Despicable of Lamb and equally despicable is his his faux ‘abhorrence’ of therapists peddling this crap.

    1. Agree it could have been surely added to the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Bill making it an illegal practice.

Indeed and his statement is an exercise in cowardice. Meanwhile, vulnerable gay people will be left to the mercy of these religious quack psycotherapists. Disgusting!

    2. As someone working within the therapy profession, this is an absolute minefield, The difficulty lies in policing it. The only options I can see are:

      1. Make all counsellors/therapists part of an accreditating body that bars so called ‘reparative’ therapy. That said, The BACP: http://www.bacp.co.uk/, UKCP: http://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/ and BPA: http://www.psychodrama.org.uk/index.php all explicitly bar sexual reorientation therapy and any therapist attempting it under their auspices is likely to be struck off as was the case with Lesley Pilkington.

      2. Bar anyone in any situation from offering ‘reparative’ therapy which then shifts the burden of proof into the legal domain.

In my opinion, the religious fundies will then simply offer it as something like coaching or something that can not be construed as counselling.

Currently, my recommendation would be to encourage anyone seeking therapy to use one of the organisations above or Pink Therapy: http://www.pinktherapy.com

  2. Sucking up to the Godalming Golf Club set methinks, can’t risk upsetting them like the equality row again, gutless tossers! Election looming

  3. Very poor excuse. What next, let rapists and murderers out of prison to save money? No, they’d never do that cause it would upset the Daily Mail brigad, who don’t care about the damage these conversion therapists do since it’s only affecting gay people.

If they refuse to ban gay-to-straight conversion ‘therapy’ then it must mean straight-to-gay conversion therapy is also legal. Lets set up a therapist company that specialises in converting heterosexuals into out and proud homosexuals. We could say that we have a high success rate in converting vulnerable adolescents. Then leak it to the Daily Mail. Before you can say “political correctness gone mad” there will be a ban in place.

  5. They remain “concerned” but aren’t going to do anything. Hah! Because their “concerns” are so pointful!

When you have the power to change something and refuse to do so, your concern is meaningless pap!

  6. Mumbo Jumbo 20 Nov 2013, 7:39pm

Even putting aside the wholly unnecessary human misery and suicides caused, I would think that the cost of years of proper therapy to unpick the damage done by conversion therapy will amount to far more.

  7. Isn’t it funny that to guard an empty building you have to have a license, but to f**k with someones head and potentially cause a lifetime of depression, or even bully someone into suicide through voodoo and mumbo jumbo, you don’t!

    This country is sickening sometimes.

  8. Effing feckin’ Tories – and that describes the “Lib Dems” too nowadays.

Iris Robinson will be delighted by this news. By failing to ensure the so-called “therapists” can no longer continue their abuse, the Government has allowed rabid fascists like her (and there are many) to feel justified in their hate speech promoting such “cures”. Some unfortunate, troubled gay people will end up in psychiatric hospitals or in their graves as a result of this decision. The Government has blood on its hands.

So they can afford to ban access to porn sites but not ban ex-gay therapy? What about the costs of all those lives who have been lost because of the horrible effects of ex-gay therapy? Money is the only thing that matters to these liars.

  10. Unfortunately we find people in every sector who will take advantage of their power. These “therapists” that offer this “therapy” are deluded, by not condemning their practice, the government condone it. I agree with the earlier response that Lamb is a disgrace for not using the power that he does have, to speak up for our community and society as a whole, who he does a great dis-service to. Inaction will undoubtedly result in only more tragedies occurring from this treacherous practice. Caring more about money than people is abhorrent!

  11. Unbelievable cowardice, when this is perpetrated on a child or young person it can have and often does have disasterous consequences, it can only be described as child abuse.
The minister needs to reconsider, or MP’s should put down a “motion of no confidence” in him.
If the practice is made illegal then it makes it easier for those who survive it, to sue those who perpetuate it No doubt the nutters and the grifters will scream religious freedom.
I have only a few words for them, religious freedom does not encompass harm to others and violation of *their* rights and abuse of children to conform to your beliefs against all reality is not a religious freedom either, it is quite simply child abuse.
    Shame minister.

  12. A disappointing response by the government and a poor excuse, they needn’t think this will be the end of the matter, it will be raised again and this “therapeutic” abuse will still need to be outlawed.
Gay cures, conversion therapy or aversion therapy are based in obsessive homophobia and are not for the benefit of the victim/patient but for the benefit of the homophobic parents, peers and religious communities that put pressure on vulnerable gay people to seeking a dangerous and impossible change in their sexual orientation/attraction, it is the worst form of anti-gay bullying, the aim of conversion “therapy” is the deliberate destruction of a gay persons sense of self and self-worth.

  13. Would any one explain to me the costs linked to banning this therapy from the NHS?

  14. James Campbell 27 Nov 2013, 4:51pm

“while statutory regulation is sometimes necessary it is not always the most proportionate or effective means of ensuring the safe and effective care of patients.”

Rubbish – it is the duty of the professonal body of any health profession to oversee and rule on professional conduct and the responsibility of the goverment to translate aspects of this into law. As I posted in another discussion:

As a mental health professional myself I applaud the appointment of Professor Dinesh Bhugra. Accredited mental health professionals must never assist in any process to reconfigure a patient’s sexuality which relates to another adult. This amounts to a breach of trust and an abuse of an individual’s human rights. psychiatrists and psychologists are NOT the moral guardians of society.

  15. All these therapists that offer gay cures should be convidted of fraud. If they would do that, then there would be no need for a new law.
