A big thank you from all of us for the acknowledgement of our rights and struggles, especially given the political adversity you encountered in your support for the LGBTi community.

Sacked for supporting human rights by Hague. Just shows how ridiculous our system is. Party whips should be banned. All votes should be open to what each individual MP personally believes is right.

    1. The passing of the Act at Westminster enabling equal marriage was achieved by just such unwhipped voting; although there were comments made on these pages in the run-up to the publishing of the Bill demanding a whipped vote, not a free, conscience-based vote, to bring the Tory rebels into line.

  3. A decent politician on the right side of things. And a politician who has DEMONSTRATED his determination to follow his convictions, rather than just prattle about having convictions.

I wonder, really, whether Shaun Woodward was a politician who changed parties over Shaun Woodward. I have not seen him in high profile gay rights events.

It’s hard to say although it was a rather drastic move given that sacked people often find their way back on to the front benches over time so I suspect there was rather more to it than simply his sacking over this one issue.

As one of his constituents I have no complaints and he certainly hasn’t shied away from issues affecting our town although I wouldn’t say he’ll be hugely missed either. On gay rights he was certainly an improvement over the last guy who was very much in the Joe Benton school of thought on gay issues.

    Good man.
